Disney Announces Sequel For a Hit Movie in 2028 – Release Date Set
Disney has officially confirmed that a sequel to its hit movie Lilo & Stitch is on the way. The announcement came from newly appointed Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro during a shareholders meeting. Lilo & Stitch 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 26, 2028, over Memorial Day weekend. Pixar’s Incredibles 3 will follow shortly after, releasing on June 16, 2028.
The original live-action Lilo & Stitch was a major success last Memorial Day weekend. It earned $182 million over four days, setting a new holiday opening record and surpassing 2023’s Top Gun: Maverick. The film went on to gross $423.7 million in the U.S. and $614.2 million internationally, making it one of the few billion-dollar hits of last year.
Before the first movie even hit theaters, director Fleischer Camp and producer Eirich had said they were focused on the current film and had not yet planned a sequel.

Fleischer Camp explained that any future projects would depend on audience response and that the franchise’s rich world offered plenty of opportunities for new stories. Eirich also noted hidden Easter eggs in the film featuring characters like Angel, Reuben, and 627, although he mistakenly referred to 627 as Leroy.
In June 2025, Fleischer Camp mentioned that he would consider a sequel only if the story felt right, rather than just following market demand. He also said he was open to exploring an animated spin-off, either as a series or a limited run. Later that same month, on June 26, celebrated as “626 Day” or “Stitch Day” Disney confirmed that the sequel was officially in development.
Chris Sanders, who originally voiced Stitch, will be returning to the franchise as a screenwriter. This marks his first involvement in the series beyond providing Stitch’s voice. Producer Eirich will also return to work on the sequel.
This new installment is highly anticipated by fans who loved the first film and its charming blend of humor, heart, and sci-fi adventure. The return of familiar characters and the creative team behind the scenes suggests Disney is aiming to capture the same magic that made the first movie such a success.
This is exciting news for both long-time fans and new audiences. Lilo & Stitch has always been a unique story that balances humor with emotional depth, and a sequel could expand the world in fun and meaningful ways. I’m curious to see how the story will evolve and what surprises the team has planned. What do you think about Lilo & Stitch 2 coming in 2028? Share your thoughts in the comments.
