Disney streaming platforms are seeing a surge in cancellations following the indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The controversy began after Kimmel made remarks about Trump and his reaction to the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during his September 15 monologue.

He criticized some MAGA supporters, saying they were trying to “characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them … doing everything they can to score political points from it.”

The Federal Communications Commission’s chairman, Brendan Carr, a Trump appointee, condemned Kimmel’s comments on a YouTube show, calling them “the sickest conduct possible.”

Shortly after, Nexstar Media announced it would stop airing Kimmel’s show on its ABC affiliates, and ABC, owned by Disney, confirmed the indefinite pre-emption of the program on September 17.

Fans quickly reacted on social media, sharing screenshots of canceled Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions and using hashtags like #CancelDisney and #CancelDisneyPlus. Many users criticized Disney for bowing to pressure from political figures.

One user wrote, “Just canceled my Disney+ and Hulu subscription because ABC caved to Trump’s and Carr’s fascism.” Another added, “Disney bent at the knee and canceled Kimmel. Maybe it’s time for Democrats and Liberals to cancel Disney?”

Several celebrities also spoke out in support of the boycott. Tatiana Maslany, star of Disney+’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, urged her fans on Instagram to “Cancel your Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN subscriptions.” Misha Collins, known for Supernatural, announced on X that he was canceling his Disney+ account “indefinitely.” Mark Ruffalo, Pedro Pascal and other stars also notably reacted to the suspension.

The backlash reflects a growing divide among viewers, with some defending Kimmel’s right to free speech while others criticized the host’s comments on the shooting. Authorities have not confirmed any political motive behind the incident as of September 19.

This controversy highlights the influence of public opinion and political pressure on media companies. It also raises questions about freedom of expression and the responsibilities of streaming platforms in handling politically sensitive content.

In my opinion, this situation shows how quickly social media can mobilize public action. Disney is facing real consequences for a decision many see as politically motivated. What do you think about viewers canceling their subscriptions over this issue? Share your thoughts in the comments.
