Disney+ Just Got More Expensive Again, and This Time the Price Hike Is Really Shocking

Streaming subscriptions have quietly become one of the more predictable annual expenses for millions of households, with price creep becoming almost as routine as the shows themselves. What started as an affordable alternative to cable has, for many services, slowly crept toward matching or exceeding the very costs it was originally meant to undercut.

Disney+ has followed that trajectory about as closely as any major platform, and this week’s announcement continues a pattern that’s become almost an annual tradition at this point. What makes this particular increase notable, though, is just how far the service has drifted from its original pricing promise.

Disney is raising prices across its streaming lineup, with the ad-free Disney+ Premium plan climbing from $18.99 to $21.49 per month, a 13 percent increase that marks the sixth price hike the service has undergone since its 2019 debut, according to a Bloomberg report. Disney is expected to begin notifying customers of the changes as early as this week.

The scale of this increase becomes especially clear when measured against where Disney+ started. The ad-free plan launched in 2019 at a modest $6.99 per month, deliberately positioned as a budget-friendly alternative to pricier competitors at the time. With this latest hike, the service now costs more than triple that original price, a dramatic shift for a platform that once built its entire brand around affordability.

That original pricing philosophy came directly from Disney’s leadership. When the company implemented an earlier round of increases, then-CEO Bob Iger acknowledged the strategy shift directly. “We were pleasantly surprised that the loss of subs, due to what was a substantial increase in pricing for the non-ad-supported Disney+ product, was de minimis,” Iger said in comments reported by NBC News. “It was some loss, but it was relatively small. That leads us to believe that we, in fact, have pricing elasticity.”

The increases extend well beyond Disney+ alone. Hulu’s ad-free Premium plan is also rising by $2.50 to match Disney+ at $21.49 per month, while the combined ad-free Disney+ and Hulu bundle will increase by $2 to $21.99, just fifty cents more than subscribing to each service individually. Standalone ad-supported plans for both Disney+ and Hulu are also increasing by 50 cents, landing at $12.49 per month.

That pricing structure appears deliberately designed to widen the gap between ad-free and ad-supported tiers, likely nudging price-sensitive subscribers toward the cheaper, ad-supported option where Disney can generate additional advertising revenue to help offset lost subscription income.

Disney isn’t alone in this pattern. Major streaming platforms across the industry have steadily raised subscription prices in recent years while simultaneously expanding advertising-supported tiers, all in an effort to drive revenue growth and improve overall profitability as content production costs continue climbing.

This latest increase notably brings Disney+’s ad-free pricing more directly in line with premium offerings from competitors like Netflix, further blurring the price distinction that once set Disney’s service apart as the more affordable choice among major streaming platforms.

With this marking the fourth price increase in as many years, subscribers accustomed to Disney’s steady upward pricing trend likely won’t be shocked by the announcement itself, even if the cumulative cost increase over seven years remains striking. Whether this latest hike prompts any meaningful subscriber pushback, or simply gets absorbed the way previous increases largely were, will likely become clearer in the weeks following the rollout.
