According to new data released by The Nielsen Company, Moana 2 is the most-watched movie on streaming so far this year.

The report shows that Disney+ users have watched the film for a total of 7.227 billion minutes in 2025. That puts it ahead of other big titles streaming on competing platforms, including Despicable Me 4 and Netflix’s Back in Action. The year is only halfway over, making the achievement even more striking.

Moana 2 first arrived in theaters in late 2024 and quickly became a box office hit. The sequel crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, doing far better than many early predictions. The original Moana earned more than $600 million globally, but the follow-up nearly doubled that success. The film later moved to Disney+, where it found an even larger audience.

Critics were more divided on the sequel. While the first movie is often praised as one of Disney’s strongest recent originals, reviews for Moana 2 were more mixed. The film currently holds a 61 percent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience response has been much warmer, with an 86 percent audience rating, showing that viewers connected with the story even if reviewers were less impressed.

The animated film brings back Auliʻi Cravalho as Moana and Dwayne Johnson as Maui. Set a few years after the first story, it follows Moana as she reunites with Maui and forms a new crew to search for a lost island and restore balance to the ocean. The project was first planned as a Disney+ series before being turned into a full theatrical release.

Moana 2 premiered in Hawaii in November 2024 and opened in U.S. theaters shortly after. By the end of its run, it became the third highest-grossing movie of 2024 and earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature. Industry estimates later showed it was one of the most profitable films of the year.
