Does Hagrid Die in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?

Hagrid is one of those smaller side characters who played an important role in Harry’s life and the book series overall. However, unlike other characters similar to him, Hagrid doesn’t get much information on his whereabouts or his life from that point on. This lack of information often leads people to assume Hagrid died but did he really?

Hagrid doesn’t actually die in the Deathly Hallows. He survived and contributed to the final fight a lot. After Hogwarts was restored he came back as a teacher.

What happened to Hagrid in the battle of Hogwarts?

During Harry’s last school year, Hagrid returned to Hogwarts at the request of now headmaster Severus Snape. He returned as the gatekeeper and professor of the Care of Magical Beings.

He also had the task of accompanying students who were assigned detention to the Forbidden Forest. Although this may seem a bit cruel it was likely done at the request of Severs Snape since Forbidden Forest tasks with Hagrid were much safer than detentions with Amycus and Alecto Carrow.

Hagrid continued to support Harry and talk about him with other students. He often hosted parties for other students in his hut, to comfort them and lift their spirits amidst everything happening at Hogwarts and in the wizarding world in general.

During one of these parties, he was almost arrested because the meeting was branded as a Harry Potter support party. Since his beliefs made him a constant target and with the added incident Hagrid had to run away.

Due to this event, Hagrid had to go into hiding. It is not clear where he went he most likely hid in the mountains or met up with his half-brother Grawpy. His escape was reported by Lee Jordan via Potterwatch radio.

He remained in hiding all the way until before the battle of Hogwarts when he came out of hiding to prevent his Acromantulas from getting hurt since they escaped the Forbidden Forest and were wandering all over Hogwarts grounds and climbing the castle walls.

When he came to help them Hagrid was tracked down by the Deatheaters and captured. After that, they led Hagrid into their center in the Forbidden forest. 

Does Hagrid die in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows?

Hagrid did not die in the Deathly Hallows. After being captured he was held in the Forbidden Forest until Harry came to surrender himself to Lord Voldemort. 

Hagrid yelled at Harry to run while he still can, but Harry stayed since he came to sacrifice himself to Lord Voldemort in order to save everyone else.

He was present when Harry was struck by Voldemort’s Killing Curse and declared dead by Narcissa Malfoy. Of course, Harry wasn’t actually dead but Hagrid did not know that.

After Voldemort decided to return to Hogwarts to declare Harry was dead to the rest of the people on the school grounds. During this, Hagrid was forced to carry Harry’s body back to the castle. Although it is not shown in the movies the book describes him as crying over the loss of Harry.

The most we see in the movies is Harry revealing to be alive and jumping out of Hagrid’s arms. However, the book further describes Hagrid’s whereabouts during the battle.

He returned to the battle with reinforcements which included Buckbeak and a herd of Hagrid’s tame Thestrals alongside the centaurs who refused to fight at the beginning of the fight.

The only described encounter Hagrid had during the fight was Walden Macnair, who Hagrid recognized as Buckbeak’s intended executioner. Hagrid found him at Hogwarts and fought with him in the Great Hall throwing him against the wall.

Both the books and movies confirm that Hagrid has survived the battle. He was one of the first people to be shown among the survivors in the Great Hall after the battle. He was also the first person who came up to Harry after he returned to congratulate him on his victory against Lord Voldemort.

What happened to Hagrid after the end of the book series?

After the battle of Hogwarts, after the school got restored and continued its educational work Hagrid came back to work as the groundskeeper and professor under the new headmaster Minerva McGonagall. 

He continued teaching all the way until 2019 when led the members of the newly established Statute of Secrecy Task Force which consisted of people seeking out a career as Magi zoologists.

Their main task was stopping magical outbursts involving magical creatures from happening and being noticed by muggles as well as taking care of any damage which may come as a result of these.

He continued training the members for this specific task and helping them when they wanted to progress to the level of an Auror.

He also rekindled his relationship with the headmistress of the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, Madame Maxime. Although the two reciprocated the feelings for each other they never married or progressed in their relationship since they came to a conclusion that it wouldn’t work out since Maxime was too sophisticated for the two to make a good couple.

Is Hagrid dead in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child?

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child takes place during Albus Potter’s first year back at Hogwarts. This would set it in the year 2017. During this time Hagrid was still present and teaching in Hogwarts and he would be for another two years.

We also know Albus met him since the books mention that Hagrid invited him for tea in his hut during the first day of school. Despite this, Hagrid didn’t actually make an appearance in the plot of the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Since Hagrid was such an important part of Harry’s school life and the fact that it was hinted that he would be there for the Cursed Child, so when the play was released and Hagrid wasn’t in it many fans were surprised by that.

This is why many people assumed Hagrid was dead or maybe gone by the time the play takes place. This is not the truth and there are many characters that suffered the same treatment. 

One such character is Neville Longbottom, who we know is a teacher at Hogwarts during the time where Cursed Child takes place. However, that doesn’t mean that he isn’t alive or has suddenly disappeared.

There is a simple explanation for this and it has to do with the medium it was interpreted in. Since the Cursed Child is actually a screenplay made for that particular medium and a novel like the original book series there is no way J.K.Rowling could have fit the same amount of information and plot into it.

The plays are a better fit for a fast-paced plot with fewer characters since it is restricted by time. The play centers around three main characters and a few cameos from prominent characters from the original series.
