Dolly Parton Tribute Specials Deliver Massive Ratings, With Abc’s ‘9 to 5’ Rebroadcast Breaking a Multi-Year Record

Television networks rarely coordinate this quickly or this extensively to honor a single public figure, but the outpouring following the loss of one of country music’s most beloved icons has proven just how deeply her legacy still resonates across generations. What began as a series of hastily assembled tribute specials has since turned into one of the biggest collective broadcast moments of the year.

Dolly Parton died of cancer on August 25 at the age of 80, and within hours, all four major broadcast networks had scrambled to put together programming honoring her decades-long career. That immediate response has continued paying off in the ratings well over a week later, with a follow-up wave of specials over the weekend drawing some of the strongest broadcast numbers seen in years.

The airing averaged 4.275 million viewers in live-plus-same-day ratings, making it the most-watched film on a broadcast network in more than three and a half years, dating back to December 2022, and the most-watched film on ABC specifically in nearly six years, since 2020’s airing of “The Sound of Music.”

That Sunday airing also made ‘9 to 5’ the No. 1 program in its 10 p.m. time slot, beating out CBS’s own Parton tribute special airing in the same window, and stood as the best non-sports telecast at 10 p.m. that night. ABC also rebroadcast “Dolly Parton: An American Original” that same Sunday, which pulled in an additional 3.566 million viewers.

The ratings success wasn’t limited to ABC’s rebroadcasts. CBS’s own special, “Dolly Parton: An American Icon,” hosted by Gayle King and Tony Dokoupil, aired the Tuesday after Parton’s death and drew 6.2 million same-day viewers. ABC’s special edition of “20/20,” titled “Dolly Parton: An American Original” and hosted by “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir, aired the same day Parton died and averaged 4.051 million total viewers, ranking No. 1 in its 10 p.m. slot.

Parton’s death also had a measurable impact on evening news viewership more broadly. On August 25, the day her death was announced, “World News Tonight with David Muir” averaged 9.2 million viewers, and the program went on to post its largest weekly viewership in five months.

The wave of tribute viewership wasn’t confined to traditional broadcast ratings either. Following her death, ‘9 to 5’ topped Samba TV’s linear viewership chart for the week, as fans flocked to revisit Parton’s 1980 film debut alongside co-stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. Parton also became the most-streamed artist worldwide in the days following her passing, as fans turned to her music catalog to remember her decades of work.

Networks rarely coordinate tribute programming this quickly or this extensively for a single celebrity, and the fact that these specials continued drawing strong numbers more than a week after her death speaks to just how broadly Parton’s influence extended across television, film and music. Late August is typically a quiet stretch for broadcast viewership, making these numbers even more notable given the timing.

Between the record-setting film rebroadcast, the strong tribute special performances, and the surge in streaming activity, the ratings data paints a clear picture of an entertainer whose reach spanned far beyond any single medium or generation of fans. For a career that spanned more than six decades, the outpouring of viewership in her final days serves as a fitting reflection of just how deeply embedded Parton became in American popular culture.
