Drew Barrymore (51) Opens Up About Audience Member Saying They Would Run From Her Dating Profile
Drew Barrymore discovered that even a Hollywood icon can face a tough critic when it comes to the world of digital dating. On a recent episode of her namesake talk show in March, the actress shared a story about asking her studio audience for their unfiltered thoughts on her dating app bio.
One man in the crowd didn’t hesitate to tell her exactly why he would have passed on her profile. Before the critique, Barrymore explained that her profile explicitly mentioned she was not interested in getting married again or having more children.
Having been married three times and being a mother to two daughters, she felt this was a transparent and honest way to start a conversation. “I said, ‘How does that sound to everybody? I’d love some feedback,” she recalled during the segment.
The man’s response was immediate and surprisingly blunt, leaving the Golden Globe winner quite shocked. “He goes, ‘I’m sorry, it’s just really off-putting, and it just sounds like you’re un-open, immovable, and staunch and I would probably run away from you,’” Barrymore shared.
This was the exact opposite of the “low-pressure” vibe she was trying to create for potential suitors. Instead of taking offense, the actress found the feedback incredibly helpful because it gave her a perspective she doesn’t often hear.
“I was like, ‘But I’m trying to liberate men to think that this is a low lift?!’” she exclaimed before revealing she edited the bio the very next day. She realized that being too firm about what she didn’t want made her seem closed off rather than easygoing.
The experience led Barrymore to conclude that it is probably best to keep things simple on dating apps to avoid being misunderstood. “I think it’s safer to probably decree nothing on a dating app. You’re never gonna win,” she advised her viewers.
She suggested that trying to be too clever or specific often backfires, so it is better to just leave the heavy details for a real conversation. Barrymore’s adventurous spirit isn’t limited to apps, as she also recently recounted a time she “shot her shot” in person while shopping with her friend Ross Mathews.
After seeing a man she found attractive, Mathews encouraged her to go talk to him, telling her to pretend she was in a romantic comedy. Unfortunately, the man was already married, but Barrymore was proud of herself for stepping out of her comfort zone.
As of late, March, the actress has plenty of reasons to be happy regardless of her dating status. It was just announced that The Drew Barrymore Show has been renewed for two more seasons, ensuring her presence in daytime television through 2028.
The show is currently enjoying its most-watched season ever, reaching over 1.6 million daily viewers who tune in for her signature blend of optimism and celebrity interviews. In addition to her hosting duties, Barrymore has been busy with several high-profile collaborations.
She recently starred in a new “Let’s Holiday” commercial for MSC Cruises alongside Orlando Bloom, which began airing earlier this year. Fans are also excited about a massive 4K Ultra HD re-release of her classic film 50 First Dates, which is scheduled to hit shelves on June 23.
There are also persistent rumors that she may soon reunite with Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu for a new Charlie’s Angels project that is currently in development at Sony. She remains one of the busiest and most beloved figures in the industry.
