The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, are working on a live-action spin-off series that will expand the universe of the show while introducing fresh characters and settings.

Finn Wolfhard, a star of the original series, described the concept as “like David Lynch’s Twin Peaks,” with a mix of different tones and stories connected through the Upside Down, but without including Hawkins or the main characters.

The spin-off will explore new locations and experiments connected to the mysterious Upside Down. “If there was one lab in Hawkins, there’s one in Russia. Where else could they be?” Wolfhard said, suggesting a wider world that fans have yet to see.

Unlike franchises such as Star Wars, the series won’t focus on expanding a complex mythology. Matt Duffer explained that the goal is to keep the storytelling grounded in the familiar Stranger Things style: kids, adventures, and sci-fi/fantasy, rather than building an overly complicated universe.

Ross Duffer added that the new series will feel almost like an anthology. “There’s going to be connective tissue, but you’re almost anthologizing in a way,” he said. The creators see this as a chance to start fresh, working with new characters and ideas without being tied to existing plotlines.

The Duffers will stay heavily involved in developing the spin-off but won’t act as showrunners, as they pursue new projects under a Paramount deal. Netflix is supporting the idea, with Chief Creative Officer Bela Bajaria praising the Duffers’ dedication to honoring the original series. She added, “I’m excited about what it’s going to be, but I don’t know what that is yet!”

While no release date has been announced, Bajaria hinted that the streaming service is ready whenever the creators are.
