‘Dune: Part Three’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Runtimes Revealed as Dunesday Shapes Up to Be a True Marathon

The countdown to “Dunesday” is officially in its final stretch. On December 18, Warner Bros. and Legendary’s ‘Dune: Part Three’ and Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ open in theaters on the same day, a box office collision fans have been buzzing about for months. With presales already breaking records for both films, plenty of moviegoers are planning to see them back to back.

That makes one detail especially important: how long each movie actually runs. Both films have been surrounded by wildly different runtime rumors, with neither studio offering a firm, official number until recently.

Now a clearer picture has emerged. Current AMC Theatres listings, highlighted by The Hollywood Handle, put ‘Dune: Part Three’ at 2 hours and 30 minutes and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ at 2 hours and 45 minutes. Watching both back to back adds up to 5 hours and 15 minutes, before trailers and snack runs.

For ‘Dune: Part Three’, the new figure is actually longer than first expected. When advance IMAX tickets first went on sale, the listing read 2 hours and 20 minutes, and AMC has since added 10 minutes, with its December 14 IMAX 70mm insider screenings reflecting the same updated length.

Even so, it remains the shortest entry in Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy. ‘Dune’ ran 2 hours and 35 minutes, while ‘Dune: Part Two’ reached 2 hours and 46 minutes, making the finale 5 minutes shorter than the first film and 16 minutes shorter than the sequel.

The ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ runtime has been more consistent. The Hollywood Reporter first reported a working runtime of 165 minutes about 5 months before release, while noting the Russo brothers hadn’t locked the final cut.

That length puts it above ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ at 149 minutes but well short of ‘Avengers: Endgame’, which runs 3 hours and 1 minute. Anthony Russo later described the current cut as roughly a 2-and-a-half-hour movie, so the final figure could still shift slightly.

Both films attracted their share of wild speculation. A July report claimed the ‘Dune: Part Three’ cut ran over 3 hours, which contradicts the theater data. On the Marvel side, rumors floated a ‘Doomsday’ runtime as long as 3 hours and 45 minutes, though those claims were never confirmed.

Some fans had hoped for an even longer ‘Dune’ finale. Villeneuve has previously suggested the third film would differ in tone, rhythm and pace from its predecessors, which lines up with its more condensed runtime.

For ‘Dune’ fans, the format may matter as much as the length. An earlier IMAX press release revealed that 71 minutes of the then-listed 140-minute runtime were filmed for IMAX, meaning more than half the movie is optimized for those massive screens.

That’s a key advantage on Dunesday. ‘Dune: Part Three’ holds an exclusive 3-week IMAX window, while ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will lean on Disney’s Infinity Vision, Dolby, ScreenX and 4DX screens instead.

For anyone tackling both films in one day, the math is daunting but doable. With roughly 5 hours and 15 minutes of combined screen time, viewers should budget well over 5 and a half hours once trailers and breaks are factored in. Whether audiences choose Arrakis first or Latveria first, December 18 is shaping up to be one of the biggest moviegoing days in years.

Are you planning to watch Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday as a Dunesday double feature?
