Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’ films are known for their scale. The first film ran 2 hours and 35 minutes, while ‘Dune: Part Two’ stretched to 2 hours and 46 minutes, making it the longest entry in the franchise so far.

With ‘Dune: Part Three’ arriving in theaters on December 18, fans have been eager to learn how long the final chapter will be. Rumors have pointed in very different directions over the past year.

Now there’s a clearer answer. As Culture Crave shared, AMC Theatres has listed the runtime for ‘Dune: Part Three’ at 2 hours and 30 minutes. That makes it the shortest film in the trilogy. It comes in 5 minutes shorter than the first film and 16 minutes shorter than ‘Part Two’.

The listing also represents an update. Several outlets noted that when advance tickets first went on sale, IMAX and AMC listed the film at 2 hours and 20 minutes, so the new figure adds 10 minutes.

AMC isn’t the only source pointing to the new runtime. The listing for the IMAX 70mm Insider Screenings on December 14 also shows 2 hours and 30 minutes. The Irish Film Classification Office has listed the film at 151 minutes, according to Dark Horizons. Warner Bros. hasn’t officially commented on the runtime.

The listings appear to settle months of speculation. In July, Jordan Ruimy claimed, citing unnamed sources, that the cut ran more than 3 hours, which conflicts with the theater data. Earlier rumors of a runtime around 3 and a half hours were never confirmed either. The current listings suggest a much leaner film than some fans expected.

The runtime may make sense given the source material. The film adapts Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel ‘Dune Messiah’, and one early reaction noted that ‘Messiah’ is shorter than Herbert’s other ‘Dune’ books.

Set almost 2 decades after Paul becomes emperor, the story focuses on the fallout of his rise to power. According to the official synopsis, political plots and a galaxy-wide holy war threaten the future only Paul can see.

Timothée Chalamet returns as Emperor Paul Atreides, alongside Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, and Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan. Javier Bardem is back as Stilgar. Anya Taylor-Joy joins as Alia Atreides, and Jason Momoa returns in a new form tied to Duncan Idaho. Robert Pattinson plays the main antagonist, Scytale.

Fans planning to see the film on the biggest screen possible will get plenty of IMAX footage. According to IMAX, 71 minutes of the film were shot for the format, meaning more than half of it is optimized for those screens.

Demand has been huge. IMAX 70mm tickets for the first Insider Screenings reportedly sold out in under 2 hours, and London’s BFI IMAX sold 33,000 advance tickets in 24 hours, a first-day record.

‘Dune: Part Three’ opens the same day as Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, setting up a major box office showdown. AMC lists the Marvel film at 2 hours and 45 minutes, 15 minutes longer than Villeneuve’s finale. For fans, a slightly shorter runtime may make a double feature a little more manageable.

How do you feel about Dune: Part Three being the shortest film in Denis Villeneuve's trilogy?
