Fans of the Dune franchise finally got their first look at the highly anticipated Dune: Part Three, as Warner Bros. and Legendary released the official trailer on Tuesday. The film is set to hit theaters on December 18, and brings back stars Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh, and Javier Bardem, with new additions Robert Pattinson and Anya Taylor-Joy joining the cast.

Ahead of the trailer, character posters were revealed on Monday showcasing familiar faces like Chalamet, Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Florence Pugh, Javier Bardem, and newcomers Isaach de Bankolé, Robert Pattinson, and Anya Taylor-Joy.

The trailer jumps 17 years after the events of Dune: Part Two. It opens with Zendaya’s Chani asking Paul, played by Chalamet, “If we have a girl, what will we name her?” She continues that if it’s a boy, they should name him Leto after Paul’s father, saying he would then “have the wisdom of his grandfather.”

The teaser quickly shifts to intense battle scenes, introducing Pattinson’s Scytale with a striking platinum blonde buzz cut. Paul, also sporting a buzz cut, climbs to the top of a plinth overlooking a massive cheering crowd before confronting an opponent in the desert. His voice-over declares, “I’m not afraid to die, but I must not die yet.” The trailer ends with Chani preparing to face an unseen enemy, highlighting the tension and high stakes to come.

Dune is Legendary’s expansive sci-fi universe, based on Frank Herbert’s acclaimed novel series. The franchise began with Dune: Part One in 2021 and continued with Dune: Part Two last year. Together, the films have grossed $1.12 billion worldwide and earned eight Oscars from 15 nominations, with both films also receiving Best Picture nominations. All three films are directed by Denis Villeneuve, who co-wrote the scripts with Jon Spaihts, with Eric Roth contributing to the first installment.

The Dune universe has also expanded into television with Dune: Prophecy, a prequel series set 10,000 years before Paul Atreides’ rise. Created by Lost writer-producer Alison Schapker, the show premiered on HBO and Max in November.

The trailer sets the stage for what looks to be an epic conclusion to Villeneuve’s adaptation of Herbert’s saga.
