Denis Villeneuve’s epic sci-fi movie finally reached the milestone of $100 million at the domestic box office, and with $268 million that the movie grossed overseas, we can say that Dune grossed $368 million so far against its budget of $165 million.
Dune is currently the 10th highest-grossing movie of the year. And although, when we look at the numbers, its numbers aren’t really mind-blown impressive, we still have to take into consideration that the movie was released during the pandemic, not to mention the simultaneous release the movie had in both theaters and on HBOMax. Even though the movie didn’t break any records, not even pandemic records to be fair, Warner Bros. gave Villeneuve a thumbs up to make a sequel, which is very much anticipated considering the first movie adapted only half of Frank Herbert’s original novel.
The movie was released on October 21 in theaters and on HBOMax. The movie received very positive reviews. Critics particularly praised Villeneuve’s direction, visual style, and ambition of the project. Only a week after its release, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures officially announced the sequel – Dune: Part Two – which is set to be released in October 2023. Villeneuve announced that he’s currently working on the script and he’s hoping to start production in early 2022.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Dune is starring Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, and Javier Bardem.
Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence, only those who can conquer their own fear will survive.Dune – Official synopsis
