‘Dutton Ranch’ Season 2 Lands a New Showrunner After Behind-the-Scenes Shakeup
The Sheridan-verse has never been short on drama, both on screen and off it. Since ‘Yellowstone’ wrapped its original run, Paramount has leaned hard into expanding the world through spinoffs, and few have carried as much weight as the one following Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler into their next chapter. Dutton Ranch follows Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser’s characters from Yellowstone as they move on to a new ranch in Texas, seeking to build an empire of their own while clashing with a rival ranch run by the Jackson family.
Despite the show’s strong debut, production has not been entirely smooth. Although the first season was successfully released, production woes led to showrunner Chad Feehan stepping down from the role, leaving fans wondering who would take over for season two. Cavell takes over the role from Feehan, who stepped away from leading the series in June after helping guide its first season.
Now there’s an answer. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that ‘Dutton Ranch’ has officially hired Benjamin Cavell, a ‘Justified’ veteran, to take the reins as showrunner heading into season two. Dutton Ranch, Taylor Sheridan’s Paramount+ ‘Yellowstone’ spinoff, has tapped the Justified veteran to lead season two, replacing Chad Feehan.
Cavell brings a deep television resume to the project. He is known for his work on shows like Justified, SEAL Team, and The Stand, having created The Institute based on a Stephen King novel, co-created SEAL Team for CBS and Paramount+, co-created The Stand, and worked on Justified for six seasons before becoming an executive producer on the acclaimed series. His background in crime dramas, military stories, and large scale adaptations makes him a strong fit for the expanding ‘Yellowstone’ universe.
The cast themselves have already weighed in on the transition. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Hauser kept things characteristically grounded, saying “Showrunners change all the time. This business is about adapting. We’ve been doing this for a long time. Things change. People move on.” Reilly echoed that sentiment, calling the first season a “really difficult but really satisfying show to make.”
The shakeup hasn’t dimmed the show’s momentum. The move comes shortly after Paramount officially renewed Dutton Ranch for a second season, with the series quickly becoming a major success for the company and the biggest original series debut in Paramount+ history. Season one even earned an impressive 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling it a model for how television should be done. The first season’s roster includes Finn Little, Juan Pablo Raba, Jai Courtney, J.R. Villarreal, Marc Menchaca, Natalie Alyn Lind, and Academy Award nominees Ed Harris and Annette Bening.
For now, story details on season two remain locked down, and there is no official release date yet, though season one remains available to stream on Paramount+. With a new creative voice steering the Dutton family’s next chapter, fans of Beth and Rip’s fresh start have plenty to debate.
