Dwayne Johnson has never been shy about having fun with the media circuit, and his latest press run has proven that once again. The actor is currently crisscrossing the globe promoting Disney’s live action reimagining of ‘Moana,’ where he reprises his role as the demigod Maui opposite newcomer Catherine Laga’aia in the title role. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 10, 2026.

Between red carpet stops and radio hits, Johnson has fielded just about every kind of question a promotional tour can throw at a movie star. He has talked training regimens, fatherhood, his wrestling roots, and even his connection to the Polynesian culture at the heart of ‘Moana.’ He can typically talk about upcoming projects, franchises, and major career moments without breaking a sweat.

That composure briefly cracked during a stop on Kiss FM, where host Tyler West asked Johnson a question that seemed harmless enough on paper. West asked Johnson what his stroke of choice was, a question meant entirely about swimming given the film’s oceanic setting. Johnson, however, heard something else entirely, and after a brief pause he burst into laughter before answering, “Domination,” catching the room completely off guard.

West quickly tried to steer things back toward family friendly territory, clarifying that he meant swimming, and the realization visibly hit Johnson in real time. The exchange has been described as the actor going “off the deep end” over an otherwise innocent question about the film’s water themed press tour.

Rather than let the clip fade quietly, Johnson leaned into it. He posted the moment to his own Instagram, joking in the caption that he may always look clean but that under the hood he is “filthy,” adding that he honestly thought West was asking about a different kind of stroke. He capped the caption off by blaming the grueling promotional schedule, joking that he needed carbs and sleep.

Fans flooded the comments with reactions ranging from secondhand embarrassment to genuine delight that Johnson was willing to poke fun at himself so publicly. One commenter noted that the second they heard his laugh, they knew exactly where the answer was headed. It is hardly the first time Johnson’s press tour humor has gone viral, and it likely will not be the last given how candid he tends to be with interviewers and fans alike.

The moment has not overshadowed the bigger picture for Johnson, who remains deeply invested in bringing ‘Moana’ to a new generation of audiences in live action form. Between the swimming mishap and his other candid press stops, this ‘Moana’ rollout has already given fans plenty to talk about before the film even reaches theaters. Do you think Johnson’s answer was the funniest unscripted moment of the entire ‘Moana’ press tour, or has he had you laughing even harder at another stop along the way?
