Edgar Wright Says the AI-Assisted ‘Spaced’ Remaster Was Released Without the Creators’ Approval
‘Spaced’ remains one of the most beloved British comedies of its era. Created by and starring Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson, with Edgar Wright directing every episode, the Channel 4 sitcom ran from 1999 to 2001 across 2 seasons and 14 episodes.
The series followed Pegg’s comic shop worker Tim Bisley and Stevenson’s Daisy Steiner as they became roommates, with Nick Frost co-starring. It previously received a feature-packed DVD release, complete with commentaries from fans including Kevin Smith, Diablo Cody and Matt Stone, but it had never been released on Blu-ray.
That’s finally changing, but not in the way its creators hoped. British distributor All3Media has announced a new 4K remaster of ‘Spaced’, which is now available for pre-order and set for release in the UK on February 27, 2027.
According to the announcement, the show was upgraded to a new 4K master using a combination of traditional and proprietary tools. The process reportedly involves algorithmic corrections, with a manual operator refining each frame.
The Amazon listing describes the show as upscaled using a proprietary AI algorithm, which quickly raised concerns among fans. Many worried about how the technology might change the look of a show originally shot on older standard-definition cameras.
Finding out about this on for the first time is… disheartening. I had been pushing to do a Blu-Ray of SPACED for years, so to find out that someone just went ahead without our involvement is…. a bummer. Not authorized by anyone involved in making the show. Finding out what happened as we speak…

Wright has now made it clear that he had nothing to do with the release. Responding to fans on X, he first said he knew nothing about the project before following up with a longer statement on November 1.
He described finding out about the remaster as disheartening, noting that he had been pushing for a ‘Spaced’ Blu-ray for years. Wright said it was a bummer to learn that someone had gone ahead without the creators’ involvement, and stressed that it was not authorized by anyone involved in making the show.
He added that he was looking into how it happened. Wright also pointed out that ‘Spaced’ is a Channel 4 show, and noted that the creative team was involved in earlier home releases but not this one.

Wright doesn’t appear to be the only one caught off guard. GamesRadar reported that Pegg and Frost were also unaware of the new release. That makes the situation even more unusual. Fans had long hoped for a high-definition version of the show, ideally with the creative team involved, so the news that the people behind it were left out has disappointed many.
The reaction online has largely focused on the remaster process. Fans saw the “algorithmic” and “proprietary” wording in the announcement and feared the show had been AI-upscaled, though Bleeding Cool noted it hasn’t been confirmed exactly how AI was used.
Some fans are also wondering whether the release will go ahead as planned. JoBlo suggested that the February date could be in doubt now that Wright is involved. For now, All3Media hasn’t publicly responded to Wright’s comments. Fans will be watching closely to see whether the creators get a chance to weigh in before the release arrives.
Wright’s long push for a proper Blu-ray shows how much the show still means to him. Whether that leads to changes in this release or a new version entirely, the debate has put ‘Spaced’ back in the spotlight.
Should the Spaced 4K remaster be delayed until Edgar Wright and the original creators can get involved?
