Edward Norton has long been considered one of the most intense and skilled actors of his generation. While he chose to take fewer roles in the late 2010s to focus on his family, he has never truly left the spotlight, consistently delivering performances that remind audiences of his immense talent.

Whether it was his Oscar-nominated turn in the 2014 dark comedy Birdman or his more recent work, Norton’s dedication to the craft of acting remains as strong as it was when he first started.

After graduating from Yale with a degree in history, Norton spent time researching various acting styles before committing to his childhood dream of being on screen. He became particularly interested in method acting, a technique he still uses today despite the controversy that sometimes surrounds it.

During a 2014 talk at the Hamptons International Film Festival, Norton defended the practice, explaining that the term ‘the Method’ is often misunderstood and misused by people in the industry.

He believes that while sense memory—the idea of using your own past emotions to fuel a performance—is a valuable tool in a classroom, it can sometimes become a hindrance on a real film set.

Norton argued that acting with someone who is too focused on their own internal emotional state is like acting with someone who is staring into a mirror. In his view, a truly great actor needs to use the actual text and the circumstances of the scene to connect with their co-stars rather than getting lost in a “cult” of specific techniques.

Norton’s own approach was heavily influenced by his admiration for Robert De Niro, who is often called the greatest method actor in history. Norton spent years studying different techniques with coach Terry Schreiber in New York, always keeping an eye on how De Niro managed to have such a diverse and long-lasting career.

He has often said that the sheer variety of work De Niro has done is what he admires most, and he was eventually able to work alongside his hero in the 2001 film The Score. That movie was a historic moment for cinema, as it featured Norton, De Niro, and the legendary Marlon Brando all in the same cast.

In recent years, Edward Norton has successfully balanced his time between major film roles and his work as a tech entrepreneur and environmental activist. In 2024, he received critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of folk legend Pete Seeger in the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown.

He famously went to great lengths for the role, not only learning the banjo but even working with a dentist to match Seeger’s specific smile to ensure his performance was as authentic as possible.

As of early this year, Norton is once again a major topic of conversation following the premiere of his new film, The Invite, at the Sundance Film Festival in January. The movie, which is a dark comedy directed by Olivia Wilde, stars Norton as a character named Hawk alongside a massive cast including Seth Rogen and Penélope Cruz.

Do you think Edward Norton’s disciplined and intellectual approach to method acting is what makes his characters so memorable, or do you prefer actors who take a more spontaneous approach to their roles? Share your thoughts in the comments!
