El Muerto: Sony Pictures Announces New Marvel Movie With Bad Bunny Set To Star

Sony Pictures is continuing to build its own shared universe featuring Marvel characters. After two Venom movies and the Morbius movie, the next two movies set in Sony’s Marvel Universe will be Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web. Both of these movies are set to come out next year, and Sony already announced plans for 2024.

This week at CinemaCon, Sony Pictures revealed that Venom 3 is officially in development, with no release date set yet, Variety has learned. But, they also announced El Muerto, a new movie featuring a titular Marvel character. Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, also known as Bad Bunny, was announced to play the titular role. The movie is set to be released on January 12, 2024.

Juan-Carlos Sanchez is a comic book character introduced in May 2006 in Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #6. He is a Mexican wrestler known as El Muerto who wanted to fight Spider-Man in a ring, and he even approached J.J. Jameson to somehow set up a match against Spider-Man. El Muerto will be the first Latino character that will lead a Marvel movie. Similar to Blue Beetle, who is the first Latino character who will lead a DC movie.

There were never any previous reports that Sony is developing an El Muerto movie, so this is certainly a surprise of sorts. It’s anyone’s guess what is Sony planning behind their walls, but we are hoping they will deliver us good movies once they come out in theaters.

Kraven the Hunter is set to be released on January 13, 2023. Madame Web is set to be released on July 7, 2023. El Muerto is set to be released on January 12, 2024. Venom 3 is also in active development, and if we look at the pattern, it wouldn’t be a surprise if they set that movie to be released in October 2023, but we’ll wait for the official announcement for that one.
