Few characters in modern fantasy carry quite the emotional weight that Frodo Baggins does for Middle-earth fans. Elijah Wood’s portrayal became so definitive that the character and the actor have remained inseparable in the public imagination for more than two decades, long after the original trilogy wrapped.

That connection is exactly why a single image, shown from behind, standing at a familiar round green door, was enough to send fans into a frenzy this week. Warner Bros. released a first-look photo from ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,’ and it’s centered entirely on Frodo’s return to the Shire.

The image shows a figure in a brown coat, walking stick in hand, approaching Bag End’s unmistakable green door surrounded by overgrown ivy and garden flowers. While the photo only captures him from behind, the setting, posture, and costuming leave little doubt about who’s stepping back through that doorway after all these years.

Wood’s Frodo was central to the emotional core of Jackson’s original trilogy, and his character’s story felt definitively closed by the time ‘The Return of the King’ ended. That sense of finality is part of what makes this reveal feel especially significant, marking a genuine return rather than a simple cameo or flashback.

Wood is confirmed to be reprising the role alongside Ian McKellen’s Gandalf and Andy Serkis’ Gollum, with Serkis also directing the film. Production is currently underway in New Zealand, giving fans their first tangible proof that Frodo’s return is genuinely happening rather than simply rumored.

‘The Hunt for Gollum’ is set before and during the events of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring,’ meaning this version of Frodo exists in a period fans have only glimpsed briefly in the original films. Producer Philippa Boyens has described the story as taking place specifically after Bilbo’s birthday party and before the Mines of Moria, calling it “quite an intense story.”

That placement gives Wood’s performance an interesting challenge: portraying a younger, less battle-worn Frodo than the one audiences watched grow increasingly weighed down by the Ring’s burden across the original trilogy. This is Frodo before the full weight of his journey has settled in, still rooted comfortably in the world the image itself so clearly evokes.

Given how central Frodo was to the franchise’s emotional resonance, it’s no surprise this particular image has become the centerpiece of fan discussion since its release. Even without a clear view of his face, the photo alone has been enough to spark waves of nostalgia and speculation about exactly how his role will factor into this new chapter of the story.

Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Boyens are all returning as producers on the project, with Warner Bros. Discovery emphasizing that their continued involvement is meant to help preserve the tone and world-building fans associate with the original films, including how beloved characters like Frodo are handled going forward.

With ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ currently scheduled for a December 17, 2027 theatrical release, fans still have a considerable wait ahead before seeing Wood’s full performance unfold on screen. For now, though, this single image of Frodo standing before Bag End has proven more than enough to reignite excitement for his return to Middle-earth.
