Effie Trinket has always been one of the most colorful characters in ‘The Hunger Games’. Elizabeth Banks played the flamboyant Capitol escort in the first 4 films, and now Elle Fanning is taking on a younger version of the character in ‘The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’.

The handoff has been warmly received from the start. Speaking to People at the premiere of ‘The Better Sister’ last year, Banks said she was thrilled for Fanning, called her perfect for the role, and revealed she had even texted the producers about it.

Fanning has now paid a playful tribute to her predecessor. As Film Updates shared, she recreated Banks’ “The Six Stages of Reading The Hunger Games: Mockingjay” for the new film.

The side-by-side comparison shows how faithfully she copied the original. In Banks’ version, she holds a copy of ‘Mockingjay’, while Fanning swaps in a copy of ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’.

Both start with a caption declaring that this is going to be the best book ever. From there, the 2 actresses move through the same reactions: excitement, fear, shock, relief, and sorrow.

Fanning’s version leans into the character’s signature flair. She appears with styled blonde curls, a patterned outfit and a colorful pink and purple backdrop, giving the recreation a playful Capitol touch.

That fits the way she has approached the press tour. At the film’s U.K. premiere, she wore a pink couture look by Robert Wun with a tall headpiece holding a ballerina figurine in front of a mirror, a look many said felt straight out of Effie’s wardrobe.

Fanning has been open about how much the role means to her. Speaking with Good Morning America at the Academy Museum Gala, she credited fans with helping her land the part, noting that Lionsgate had been receiving online requests for her to play Effie.

She also called Effie her favorite character. Fanning praised Banks for bringing layers to the role, showing a deep respect for what came before. The 2 actresses recently interviewed each other for People, where they swapped stories about the best and worst notes they’ve received from directors. During the conversation, Banks praised Fanning’s take on Effie, telling her she nailed it.

Banks has also said she’d be open to returning herself, possibly in a ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ epilogue, if fans wanted it. She admitted she hadn’t yet read the novel, though, and joked that interviewers shouldn’t ask her about it.

‘Sunrise on the Reaping’ is set 24 years before the original ‘The Hunger Games’ and follows a young Haymitch Abernathy, played by Joseph Zada, through the 50th Hunger Games. Fanning’s Effie serves as the District 12 escort for that year’s tributes.

The cast also includes Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Kieran Culkin, Glenn Close, and Ralph Fiennes as President Snow. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Woody Harrelson are also returning in their original roles. The film opens in theaters on November 20. The recreation has gone over well online, with fans praising how closely Fanning matched Banks’ expressions.

It’s a fun nod to the franchise’s history and a sign of how much the new cast respects the original films. With the release just weeks away, moments like this are helping connect longtime fans with a new generation of Panem.
