Elon Musk says his AI company xAI will be able to make a “great” video game by the end of next year. The claim came after a user on X shared a short AI-generated video clip that looked like a war game, made with Grok Imagine.

The post said, “Video games will be dynamically generated by Grok in the future.” Musk replied, “The xAI game studio will release a great AI-generated game before the end of next year.”

Musk later followed up with another post, saying that Grok, the company’s chatbot, “will make a movie that is at least watchable before the end of next year and really good movies in 2027.”

xAI, which Musk founded in 2023, has been working on several AI projects. Its main one is Grok, a chatbot that is integrated with X. Last year, xAI introduced Aurora, a text-to-image tool that allows Grok to make images from written prompts. Then in July, it launched Grok Imagine, which can create six-second animated clips with sound.

Now Musk says his company’s technology will be able to make full video games, and not just any game, but one he believes will be “great.” This surprised some people since AI-generated video has been improving quickly, but AI-made games are still a new and developing field.

Back in February, Musk talked about AI gaming during an xAI livestream. He said, “If you’re interested in joining us and building AI games, please join xAI. We’re announcing it tonight, let’s go.”

For Musk, this isn’t his first time working in the gaming world. Before his days at SpaceX and Tesla, he worked at Rocket Science Games in the mid-1990s. He’s even credited in the Mega CD games Loadstar: The Legend of Tully Bodine and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs: The Second Cataclysm, which both got mixed reviews when they were released.

The idea that xAI could build a full AI-generated video game in just over a year sounds bold, but if Musk’s claim turns out to be true, it could be another big moment in the world of artificial intelligence.
