Elon Musk Upset Over Alleged Black Helen of Troy Casting in ‘The Odyssey,’ Says Christopher Nolan Has “Lost Integrity”
Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic, The Odyssey, is already stirring debate months before its July 17 release. The film, a modern Imax adaptation of Homer’s classic tale, has sparked controversy over speculation about Lupita Nyong’o’s role.
Some fans and commentators have claimed Nyong’o will play Helen of Troy, the legendary figure whose beauty is said to have launched a thousand ships.
This speculation drew the attention of Elon Musk, who weighed in on X, the platform he owns. Responding to a user who argued Helen in the original text is fair-skinned, blonde, and the face that launched a thousand ships because she was so beautiful that men started a war over her, Musk wrote, “Chris Nolan has lost his integrity.”

Despite the rumors, Universal Pictures and Syncopy have not officially confirmed Nyong’o’s role. Reports suggest she might be playing someone else entirely, such as Athena or Clytemnestra, the wife of Agamemnon.
The Odyssey follows Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, as he journeys home after the Trojan War, facing mythical challenges along the way. Damon reunites with Nolan for the third time, after Interstellar and Oppenheimer.
The cast also includes Tom Holland as Telemachus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, and Zendaya in a mysterious role. Other stars confirmed are Robert Pattinson as the suitor Antinous, Charlize Theron as Circe, and Jon Bernthal as Menelaus. Surprising additions include Travis Scott and Mia Goth, alongside John Leguizamo and Elliot Page.

Nyong’o has been busy recently, starring in A Quiet Place: Day One and voicing a role in The Wild Robot.
The film is being shot across the globe using new IMAX technology, with Nolan promising a mythic action epic that captures the scale and intensity of the original story. Even with the debate over casting, expectations remain high thanks to Nolan’s history of creating visually stunning and thought-provoking films.
Fans continue to discuss whether the casting of Nyong’o matters for historical or mythological accuracy, or if it is fine to adapt the characters with a modern perspective. Her involvement, whatever the role, adds star power to an already impressive ensemble.
Ccasting discussions often blow up before a film is released, especially for iconic stories like The Odyssey. Until the movie comes out, it’s hard to judge how the characters will be portrayed.
