Blunt recently reflected on that specific encounter, describing the director’s behavior as intentionally demeaning and unprofessional.
“He was really cruel in the audition, and loved taking me down a peg or two,” Blunt shared during a candid discussion with SAG-AFTRA. She recalled feeling diminished by an atmosphere she described as having a “very misogynistic vibe,” which left her feeling like a “shell” of herself.
Despite the prestige of the project, which eventually earned six Emmy nominations, Blunt has no regrets about failing to secure the part. She was blunt in her assessment of the filmmaker, stating, “I should just say he was vile. Really horrible.”
Her early career was marked by several such unconventional hurdles, including an unusual request from director Paweł Pawlikowski during her audition for My Summer of Love. He reportedly asked her to tap into a deeply uncomfortable and specific family-based fantasy to help her access the necessary emotions for the scene.
Unlike her memory of Konchalovsky, however, she remembers the collaboration with Pawlikowski with genuine affection. That 2004 film eventually served as her breakout role, proving that even eccentric methods can lead to positive professional growth when respect is present.
As of March 20, Emily Blunt is one of the most sought-after stars in Hollywood with a schedule that reflects her massive industry standing. In addition to the upcoming Disclosure Day, she recently starred in the MMA drama, The Smashing Machine.
