Emmy Rossum Reveals the Surprising Way ‘Shameless’ Complicated Her Love Life

For more than a decade, Emmy Rossum was the beating heart of ‘Shameless’ as Fiona Gallagher, the fierce older sister holding a chaotic Chicago family together. The Showtime series gave her one of the defining roles of her career, but as the actress now reveals, playing Fiona also followed her into her dating life in ways she never expected.

Rossum was just 24 when ‘Shameless’ premiered in 2011, and the series was known for its raw, unfiltered approach, including semi-regular nude scenes. For a young actress still figuring out who she was, that visibility came with consequences that stretched well beyond the set.

Appearing on Maria Sharapova’s podcast, Rossum opened up about how the show’s nudity shaped the way men saw her. “It got quite tricky because of the nudity on the show,” she told ‘Pretty Tough’. “All of the guys that I would go out with had preconceived notions of who I was or how I was sexually.”

Rossum described the experience as bizarre, admitting she was surprised that people struggled to separate her real identity from the characters she played. She explained that growing up in your 20s means dating while also coming into your own as an artist, and that when your body is part of your art, people can get confused.

One encounter in particular stuck with her. Rossum recalled meeting a man on a plane who asked her out, and while she found him cute, she quickly realized they weren’t meant to be together.

During the date, he shared that he hoped to become president someday, then asked whether dating someone who had been exposed on screen the way she had might become a problem for his political future. Rossum said she initially complimented his big goal before realizing, in her words, that it was an insane conversation to have.

The anecdote has quickly made the rounds online, with many outlets zeroing in on the mystery date’s surprisingly blunt concern. It’s a striking example of how audiences, and apparently would-be politicians, can blur the line between performer and role.

Rossum’s love story eventually took a very different turn. She was briefly married to Justin Siegel from 2008 to 2010, and was later romantically linked to Adam Duritz, before marrying producer and director Sam Esmail in 2017. The couple shares 2 children.

She has previously explained that she and Esmail knew each other for about a year while developing the film ‘Comet’ together, and that she gradually found herself seeing life through his lens. On ‘Pretty Tough’, she credited their shared values, describing them as family first and work second.

That partnership extends to their home life as well. Rossum shared that when one of them is busy working, the other steps up, with Esmail handling school drop-off and pickup when she’s on tour or making a movie.

These days, Rossum is enjoying a new wave of success on her own terms. She currently stars in Hulu’s ‘Furious’ as an FBI agent hunting a female serial killer, and she also serves as an executive producer on the series.

The show was recently renewed for a second season, and Rossum went to impressive lengths to prepare, flying herself to Texas for weapons training and situational combat drills. Sharapova noted that their conversation also touched on juggling the roles of producer and actor, as well as pay negotiations that ended up becoming public.
