Disney could be plotting a major move in the gaming world, and all eyes are on Epic Games, the studio behind the blockbuster Fortnite. While Epic is not currently for sale, recent reports suggest Disney executives are watching closely for the right moment to make a play, according to GameSpot.

Epic Games is in the middle of significant cost-cutting measures, laying off more than 1,000 employees, including some who helped design Fortnite’s most iconic characters. Among those affected was Mike Prinke, a terminally ill father battling cancer, highlighting the human cost behind the company’s financial decisions.

Tech reporter Alex Heath told The Town that Disney’s senior leadership is eager to acquire Epic if the opportunity arises. “I think if Epic ever sold, if it ever decided to call it quits on being an independent company, Disney would be the most natural home for it for a lot of reasons,” Heath said. Not all Disney executives share this enthusiasm, however, and some remain skeptical about whether the move would make sense.

Former Disney executive Kevin Mayer, who briefly led TikTok and now heads Candle Media, weighed in during a CNBC interview, saying Disney could benefit financially from acquiring Epic or a similar gaming asset. “I think Epic or some other video game asset would be a great addition to The Walt Disney Company’s asset base,” Mayer explained.

Disney’s CEO, Josh D’Amaro, is known to be a passionate gamer and played a key role in Disney’s $1.5 billion investment in Epic and Fortnite. The Hollywood Reporter notes that D’Amaro is planning to increase Disney’s focus on gaming and interactive entertainment, signaling that even if Epic isn’t acquired, Disney is actively pursuing growth in this space.

Whether Disney eventually moves to buy Epic or targets another gaming company, the combination of Epic’s massive audience and Disney’s media power could create a major shift in the entertainment landscape.

This potential deal would be a game-changer for both the gaming industry and Disney’s strategy. Epic’s influence in live-service gaming combined with Disney’s global reach could create unprecedented opportunities, and challenges ,for players and fans. What do you think?
