Epstein Documentary Is Getting a Major International Streaming Rollout via HBO Max , Here are the Details

Documentary filmmaking around Jeffrey Epstein’s case has continued expanding in scope and depth in the years since his death, as journalists and investigators keep working to untangle the full extent of his trafficking network and the institutional failures that allowed it to continue for so long. Few entries in that growing catalog have drawn as much attention as ‘Diabolical: The Epstein Files,’ a documentary produced by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s News documentary unit.

The film, which premiered on ABC TV in Australia earlier this year, follows Walkley Award-winning reporter Grace Tobin as she speaks directly with people connected to the case, including U.S. politicians Thomas Massie and Marjorie Taylor Greene, Epstein’s brother Mark, and journalist Julie K. Brown, whose original reporting helped bring Epstein’s crimes to wider public attention. That documentary is now headed for a significant expansion beyond Australia. Warner Bros. Discovery has acquired international distribution rights to ‘Diabolical: The Epstein Files’ for HBO Max, with the film set to premiere across international territories including the U.K., Italy, and the Netherlands starting September 3, according to Variety.

Under the terms of the agreement, HBO Max will hold exclusive all-television and SVOD rights in the U.K. and Italy, including Italian-speaking Switzerland, along with exclusive non-standard television and SVOD rights in the Netherlands. The platform has also secured exclusive SVOD rights across a considerably broader footprint, including Central and Eastern Europe, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Turkey, Iceland, Cyprus, the Baltics, the CIS, Malta, Israel, and Ukraine.

Myriam Lopez-Otazu, senior VP of international unscripted content and global networks EMEA at Warner Bros. Discovery EMEA, framed the acquisition as part of a broader commitment to serious documentary journalism. “‘Diabolical: The Epstein Files’ is a timely examination of a case that not only shook international headlines but profoundly affected perceptions of power and influence,” Lopez-Otazu said in a statement reported by Variety. “By exploring the scale and consequences of these crimes, the documentary provides our audiences with insight into one of the most significant and disturbing abuse cases in recent history.”

Throughout the film, Tobin gathers first-hand accounts from investigators, legal experts, journalists, and others closely tied to the case, building a narrative that scrutinizes failures across policing, the courts, and broader social institutions that allowed Epstein’s abuse to persist largely undetected for years. Executive producer Caitlin Shea has described the documentary as an examination of how Epstein’s crimes helped unite public scrutiny around the influence wielded by powerful figures connected to him.

With its international rollout now confirmed for early September, ‘Diabolical: The Epstein Files’ is positioned to reach a considerably wider audience than its original Australian broadcast, extending the documentary’s reach into some of Europe’s largest media markets.
