Eva Green (46) Looks Back on the Brutal ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ Scene That Left Her Covered in Bruises
Few actors can steal a blockbuster quite like Eva Green. In 2014’s ‘300: Rise of an Empire’, the follow-up to Zack Snyder’s 2006 hit ‘300’, she played Artemisia, the ruthless commander of the Persian navy, and quickly became the most talked-about part of the film.
The movie unfolds largely at the same time as the original, following Sullivan Stapleton’s Athenian general Themistokles as he leads a Greek fleet against a much larger Persian armada. NPR called Artemisia one of the film’s most memorable characters, describing the whole production as gloriously campy.
More than a decade later, one scene from the film continues to resurface online. Green’s intense encounter with Stapleton has become the movie’s most infamous moment, and the actress has described it as less of a love scene and more of an all-out battle that left her with bruises all over her body.
Green opened up about the scene in a 2014 interview with ShortList magazine around the film’s release. She explained that she approaches intimate scenes thoughtfully, considering how they’ll be filmed and whether they serve the story.
But this one, she said, was essentially a fight. Green revealed that she was left bruised afterward and admitted she even smacked her co-star during filming. She also shared a lighter detail from the set. Green joked that Stapleton was a real man who needed no encouragement, which made it even funnier that he had to have his chest hair waxed off for the role.
According to Green, the production actually shot 2 versions of the moment. She told Total Film that there was a gentler version and the more aggressive take, with the latter making the final cut. In another interview from the press tour, she described the scene as a love-hate struggle. At the time, she also said she hadn’t yet seen the finished sequence but had heard it was quite brutal.
Not everyone embraced the scene. Some critics at the time felt uncomfortable with how it was staged and filmed, questioning the way the camera framed Green’s character. Others have come to appreciate its sheer audacity.
In a recent retrospective, Far Out Magazine called it the most memorable scene in ‘Rise of an Empire’ by far, while arguing that Green carried the sequence and balanced beauty with brutality.
For Green, the scene was just one part of a bold performance. She described Artemisia as an unusual character, a woman leading a navy who is driven, and almost blinded, by vengeance.
The actress drew inspiration from figures like Cleopatra and Lady Macbeth while preparing for the role. Though she has described herself as shy in real life, she has said that characters like Artemisia give her a chance to let loose in ways she never would off-screen.

The scene keeps getting rediscovered more than a decade later, largely thanks to Green’s commanding performance. Now 46, she is still being asked about it, a testament to how unforgettable her turn as Artemisia remains.
Whether viewers see it as ridiculous, captivating, or both, the moment has secured its place in pop culture history. And for many fans, Green’s fearless commitment is exactly why ‘300: Rise of an Empire’ is still remembered at all.
