That momentum carried into the finale, “Fortunate,” where Garnet and her crew were finally able to step off the ship and feel real gravity on the planet Trappist 1b, home to an established colony called Homebase. The moment of relief did not last. The colony’s more than 1,200 residents turned out to be under the control of Evelyn Maddox, who had returned with a scheme to control everyone through subdermal chip implants.

The finale escalated quickly from there. Nearly every member of the Ark One crew ended up a target of Maddox’s implant scheme, which was secretly administered during the colony’s standard medical intake process. It ultimately fell to Kelly to stop her own mother, and according to the show’s creators, that confrontation had been building for a long time. Series co showrunner Jonathan Glassner told TVInsider that the decision to bring Maddox back only to have her killed by her daughter followed the storytelling principle of Chekhov’s gun, meaning a setup like that had to eventually pay off.

Beyond the Maddox confrontation, the finale tied up several character arcs while planting new mysteries. Kabir and Marsh shared a kiss that convinced Marsh to stay behind on the new colony rather than return to Ark One, and Eva transferred crucial archival files, including a list of every ship that had left Earth, from Ark 15 over to Ark One. The episode closed on two unresolved threads, a warning from a contact on Ross 128B urging Garnet not to come there, and Angus uncovering a stone slab bearing text in an unknown language.

What the Season 2 Finale Sets Up for Season 3

Critics generally viewed the finale as a high point for the series. TV Fanatic called it a satisfying culmination of the season’s risks, with its review noting that the ending worked as both a suitable endpoint if the show wasn’t renewed and a springboard for more story if it was. Speaking with Space.com after the finale aired, creator Dean Devlin framed the entire two season run as a setup for what the series was always meant to become, explaining that arriving at Trappist was really the show “launching” as a proper search and rescue mission, a framing he shared exclusively with Space.com.

The wait for confirmation on what comes next took time. SYFY did not officially renew ‘The Ark’ for a third season until March 2025, nearly six months after the Season 2 finale aired.
