Everything We Know So Far About Milly Alcock’s DCU ‘Supergirl’
The DC Universe is expanding, with new leadership and a fresh slate of interconnected films and television shows. A significant part of this new chapter is the introduction of a new Supergirl. This version of the character promises to be a departure from previous on-screen portrayals, offering a more complex and hardened hero for audiences to discover.
This upcoming cinematic take on the iconic hero is part of a broader strategy to build a cohesive and compelling narrative across various platforms. The new DC Studios, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran, has announced an ambitious lineup of projects for what they are calling “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.”
This plan aims to introduce a mix of well-known characters and lesser-known figures from the DC Comics library, creating a rich and diverse cinematic universe. The Supergirl film is a key component of this initial phase.
The new film is set to be titled simply Supergirl, after initially being announced with the subtitle Woman of Tomorrow. The movie has a scheduled release date of June 26, 2026. Taking the lead role of Kara Zor-El is Australian actress Milly Alcock.
Many will recognize Alcock from her breakout performance as the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in the popular series House of the Dragon. Her casting was confirmed by James Gunn, who stated he was impressed by her auditions and screen tests, and felt she embodied the “edge, grace [and] authenticity” needed for this new interpretation of the character.
This new vision for Supergirl draws heavily from the 2021-22 comic book miniseries, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, written by Tom King with art by Bilquis Evely. That story presents a more world-weary and emotionally scarred Kara.
Unlike her famous cousin, Superman, who was raised on Earth by loving parents, this Supergirl spent her formative years on a remnant of Krypton, where she witnessed the death and destruction of her people. This experience has left her more jaded and hardcore than fans might be used to seeing.
The film will reportedly follow her on a journey of self-discovery across the galaxy. She teams up with a young alien girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll, who is on a quest for revenge against the man who murdered her father.
Ana Nogueira is writing the screenplay for the film, and Craig Gillespie, known for his work on I, Tonya and Cruella, is set to direct. The supporting cast includes Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll and Matthias Schoenaerts as the villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills.
Other cast members announced include David Krumholtz and Emily Beecham, who will likely portray Supergirl’s parents, Zor-El and Alura In-Ze, in flashbacks to Krypton’s final days. Jason Momoa is also slated to appear as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo.
Before her solo film, Milly Alcock made her debut as Supergirl with a cameo appearance in the 2025 Superman movie. In a brief scene at the end of the film, a disheveled Kara appears at the Fortress of Solitude to retrieve her dog, Krypto, revealing that Superman had been pet-sitting.
This introduction gave audiences a small glimpse of her rebellious and messy personality, setting the stage for her own movie. The scene also hinted at the comic’s storyline, where Kara is found drinking on a planet with a red sun, as she is unable to get intoxicated under a yellow sun.
Filming for Supergirl reportedly took place in England and Scotland from January to May of 2025.
