‘Facing El Chapo’ Just Dethroned Netflix’s Biggest Blockbusters, and Nobody Saw It Coming

Netflix has had no shortage of splashy action releases in 2026, from Alan Ritchson’s sci-fi-tinged ‘War Machine’ to Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s ‘The Rip.’ Each arrived with star power, marketing muscle, and the kind of pre-release buzz that practically guarantees a spot on the charts.

So when a low-key Mexican crime thriller with no A-list Hollywood names quietly slipped onto the platform in late August, few expected it to make much noise. That assumption didn’t last long.

‘Facing El Chapo’ has debuted as the biggest international movie of 2026, racking up 18 million views in its opening three days on Netflix. The film, also known by its Spanish title ‘La Captura,’ didn’t just crack the Top 10 — it obliterated the non-English-language chart entirely, leaving the next closest title, ‘A Child of My Own,’ trailing with 6.2 million views.

Directed by Chava Cartas, ‘Facing El Chapo’ stars Alfonso Herrera and Noé Hernández as Arturo Carmona and Héctor Rosales, two federal police officers patrolling the highways of Sinaloa. What starts as a routine traffic stop during a long overtime shift turns into the encounter of a lifetime when the men discover the car’s occupant is none other than Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, played by Héctor Kotsifakis.

From there, the officers are thrust into an impossible moral bind: hand over one of the world’s most wanted criminals and risk their lives, or accept a payout and let him disappear. It’s a premise that sounds almost too dramatic to be real, except it largely is.

The film draws from Operation Black Swan, the actual January 2016 military mission that led to Guzmán’s recapture following his infamous prison escape through an underground tunnel. The screenplay, penned by Bernardo Esquinca, is based on a chronicle by journalist Héctor de Mauleón, though the filmmakers have been upfront that not every beat on screen unfolded exactly as depicted.

Cartas, who previously directed ‘Counterattack,’ explained what drew him to the material in comments shared with Netflix’s Tudum, saying the production team stumbled onto the officers’ story while working on his earlier film and immediately recognized its potential.

What makes the 91-minute thriller’s rise even more striking is how it got there. Unlike Netflix’s typical awards-season contenders or IP-driven tentpoles, ‘Facing El Chapo’ leaned on virtually no traditional promotional push, with much of its momentum credited to organic viewer interest and social sharing rather than a coordinated marketing rollout.

By August 23, FlixPatrol had the film sitting at number one in 71 countries, outranking established names like ‘The Great Wall’ and even Sony’s animated hit ‘Spider-Verse’ on regional charts. In the US specifically, it topped Netflix’s domestic Top 10, edging out competition such as ‘To Catch a Cheater’ and ‘The Last House.’

Critics have noted that the film’s true-crime foundation is likely doing a lot of heavy lifting here, tapping into the same appetite that has fueled prior narco-thriller hits. Its stripped-down, tension-heavy approach has also drawn comparisons to genre touchstones that leaned on realism over spectacle.

For a movie that arrived without a single marquee Hollywood name attached, unseating Netflix’s own splashy 2026 releases is no small feat. It suggests that, at least for now, audiences are still very much in the mood for grounded, fact-inspired crime drama over polished blockbuster gloss.

Whether ‘Facing El Chapo’ can hold onto its throne remains to be seen, but its opening weekend numbers have already rewritten expectations for what a modestly budgeted international thriller can do on a global stage.
