Famke Janssen Just Sent Marvel Studios A Not So Subtle Message About ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

X-Men nostalgia has been running high ever since Marvel Studios began confirming which familiar mutant faces would be suiting up for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Fans spent months speculating over the cast reveal video, hoping to spot every actor who once anchored the original Fox franchise back in fighting shape for the Russo Brothers’ massive crossover.

That excitement, though, has come with a noticeable gap. While stars like Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Alan Cumming and Kelsey Grammer all signed back on for the film, one name many expected to see was missing entirely, and it belongs to one of the franchise’s most iconic characters.

That absence is Jean Grey, and the actress who played her, Famke Janssen, is not staying quiet about it. Speaking on a panel at Spacecon 2026, the actress reiterated that she has not been contacted for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and admitted she finds the decision puzzling, saying plainly that she believes the studio dropped the ball by leaving her out.

Janssen first brought Jean Grey to life in 2000’s ‘X-Men,’ then returned for ‘X2: X-Men United’ and ‘X-Men: The Last Stand,’ along with brief cameos in ‘The Wolverine’ and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past.’ Her connection to the role spans nearly a decade and a half of franchise history, which is part of why her absence from this reunion has caught so much attention from longtime fans.

During the same conversation, Janssen also made clear she still has unfinished business with the character, telling Nerdtropolis that she is ready and willing to dive back into a darker version of Phoenix if Marvel ever comes calling. The comment only added fuel to ongoing fan theories that her exit from the franchise may not be as final as it appears.

Marvel has not addressed Janssen’s comments, and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is currently set to premiere on December 18, 2026, bringing together heroes from the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men in what is being billed as the franchise’s biggest crossover yet. Whether Jean Grey eventually factors into that story, possibly even in the already announced ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ remains to be seen.

For now, Janssen’s words read less like bitterness and more like an actress who still believes in unfinished potential for a character she helped define on screen. Do you think Marvel made the wrong call by leaving Jean Grey out of ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ or could the Phoenix still be saving her fire for ‘Secret Wars’?
