Famke Janssen has made it clear she’s not planning to return as Jean Grey in Avengers: Doomsday. In a new interview with Kristian Harloff, the actress opened up about her career, her upcoming projects, and how she feels about revisiting the X-Men character that made her famous.

Janssen said she hasn’t been contacted about appearing in the Marvel film and wouldn’t be interested even if she were.

She explained that her focus has shifted toward projects where she has more control and creative say. As an executive producer on her new Netflix series Amsterdam Empire, she now plays a bigger role behind the scenes. “I would not be asked back on Doomsday, or somewhere else, with that type of input. That’s not what they want from me,” she told Harloff.

For Janssen, the idea of returning to play Jean Grey again just doesn’t hold much appeal anymore. She said she wants to move forward, not look back.

“It’s hard for me now to just look back and worry, or think about a part where I get a few lines,” she said. “It just doesn’t seem that interesting to me. I’m in a different place, and I’ve earned my way into this moment, and I’m running with it, because this is 80 films under my belt, and I’ve paid my dues.”

Still, the actress didn’t completely rule out joining a big ensemble movie like Avengers: Doomsday in the future, if it were the right kind of role. She explained that she enjoys creative challenges and wants any project she does to give her space to explore that. “But at this moment in time, I just finished a movie yesterday in Bulgaria, called One Second After, and I also designed my clothes on that one as well,” Janssen said.

“It’s so cool to have these added parts to it, what I’m doing in my life right now, because I love creativity. I’m always looking to create.”

It seems what Janssen really wants is for her characters, including Jean Grey, to have meaningful roles, not just short appearances for nostalgia’s sake. She’s proud of what she’s accomplished and is choosing to keep building her career on her own terms.
