As the largest cinematic universe ever, the MCU features a vast array of characters from diverse backgrounds. However, some stand out for their wisdom, and that’s exactly what MCU fans on Ranker set out to determine—who is the wisest of them all. From Thanos, who took extreme measures to address the universe’s challenges, to Vision, an embodiment of artificial intelligence, let’s explore who ranks as the wisest.

10. Thor

Thor is often the butt of jokes about his intelligence, but one can’t be deemed worthy of the Asgardian Kingdom and Mjolnir without possessing wisdom. Thor’s pursuit of justice, wisdom, and a good life is evident, and his worthiness in wielding the hammer is proof of his wisdom. While his character has experienced highs and lows, with many fans disapproving of his portrayal in Love and Thunder, it’s clear that fans recognize Thor as being far wiser than the writers have recently shown.

9. Iron Man

I don’t agree with placing Iron Man, aka Tony Stark, in the top 10. Intelligence shouldn’t be mistaken for wisdom. While Stark is one of the smartest characters in the comics, he isn’t necessarily wise, especially in most of his appearances. Intelligence is creating Ultron; wisdom is knowing he shouldn’t be created.

That said, wisdom often comes through learning from mistakes, and Iron Man made plenty in the MCU, ultimately growing from them.

8. Peggy Carter

Peggy Carter is relentless and never compromises when it’s not the right choice. She’s steadfast, breaking before bending, which might not traditionally be seen as wisdom. However, like Iron Man, Carter gets things done—and she does so the right way.

7. Captain America

Rogers has witnessed the world in two radically different eras. Having grown up in a completely different time, he adapted to the future rather than trying to force it to match his past. He prioritizes morals, courage, and justice, understanding that shortcuts lead nowhere.

6. Nick Fury

Fury deserves a much higher spot on this list. Why? Because he’s always prepared. While ‘Secret Invasion’ portrayed him in a less favorable light, he still demonstrated that even under extreme stress and trauma, he gets things done. Fury may not always be the smartest or most powerful person in the room, but his wisdom lies in surrounding himself with capable and intelligent individuals. For this reason, I believe he should be in the top 3.

5. Odin

Odin possesses timeless wisdom, gained from his extensive lifespan and conquests. With such experience comes inevitable mistakes, but Odin learned that some battles are unwinnable. His inclusion on this list is unquestionable, as true wisdom is one of his inherent powers.

4. Howard Stark

The same reasoning that applies to Iron Man for why he shouldn’t be on this list can be applied to Howard Stark as well. However, Howard deserves his high ranking because he was wise enough to recognize that Tony Stark was his greatest creation.

3. King T’Chaka

Creating prosperity for your people often requires making tough decisions. As one of the most advanced civilizations, Wakanda demanded that T’Chaka make challenging and wise choices. This characteristic is central to his legacy and is why he ranks so highly on this list.

2. Vision

Life holds immense value for him. With his unique origin, he is committed to safeguarding life on Earth, employing his advanced abilities to this end, even if it requires self-sacrifice. Vision understands that he is not superior to humans; without them, he wouldn’t exist. Although I don’t agree with his high ranking, he is undoubtedly one of the wisest characters.

1. The Ancient One

The Ancient One’s origins, powers, and motivations are largely mysterious. As Sorcerer Supreme, she has safeguarded Earth for centuries. She recognizes that the unseen holds equal significance to the visible. Her power stems from the unknown, and although drawing from the Dark Dimension for extended life is morally ambiguous, her profound awareness is undeniable.
