The new Fantastic Four movie is getting closer to hitting theaters, and now fans know how much Marvel Studios spent to make it. According to several reports, the movie’s production budget is about $200 million. That might sound like a lot, but for Marvel, it’s actually pretty normal. Some of their biggest films have gone much higher.

For example, Avengers: Endgame is still Marvel’s most expensive movie ever, costing around $400 million to make. That film brought together almost every major Marvel character, so the cost made sense. Fantastic Four isn’t trying to match that level of scale, at least not with this first movie.

Even though $200 million is a big number, it’s the same budget as many other recent Marvel films. Movies like Deadpool & Wolverine, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Black Panther all had similar budgets, according to reports.

In fact, the Fantastic Four movie is far from Marvel’s cheapest project. The lowest budgets in the Marvel Cinematic Universe still belong to the original Ant-Man and its sequel, Ant-Man and the Wasp, which were made for much less punching in $130 million budgets.

The $200 million budget is said to cover everything needed for the movie’s production, including paying the cast and crew, building sets, creating costumes, filming in various locations, and adding special effects. Marketing isn’t included in that number if we’re following the usual logic.

Most of the movie was filmed at Pinewood Studios in England, with other scenes shot in Spain. Director Matt Shakman wanted to use real sets and props whenever possible. He even used old film cameras for some shots to give the movie a unique style. Shakman reportedly aimed for the movie to look like it came from the 1960s, even though it’s a modern film.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has said that bringing back the Fantastic Four was important for the company. In his words, he wanted to bring Marvel’s “first family” to the “platform and level they deserve.”

Fantastic Four: First Steps budget was first reported by Variety.
