‘Fantastic Four’ Star Michael Chiklis Says He’d Suit up as Ben Grimm Again if Marvel Ever Calls
Legacy actors returning to roles that once defined their careers has become something of a recurring trend across the superhero genre, with studios increasingly finding creative ways to bring back familiar faces for brief, nostalgic cameos. Few actors carry quite the same complicated history with a role as the man who first brought one particular rock-skinned hero to the big screen.
Michael Chiklis has spent the better part of two decades navigating questions about his time playing Ben Grimm, watching the character eventually pass to a new generation of actors within Marvel’s rebooted cinematic universe. Rather than closing the door on that chapter entirely, though, he’s continued signaling genuine openness to one more turn in the role.
In a new video shared to Instagram, Chiklis reaffirmed that he’d be open to reprising Ben Grimm if Marvel Studios ever came calling, telling fans simply, “I love playing that role.” That sentiment tracks closely with comments he’s made previously about the character, having told outlets he’d “always consider anything,” explaining that his openness now comes down to “how it’s being done, who’s doing it,” rather than feeling any professional obligation to say yes.
Chiklis’s connection to Ben Grimm runs deeper than most actor-character pairings in the superhero genre. He’s spoken about growing up reading Fantastic Four comics as a kid, and reportedly told his brother at age 18 that he’d play Ben Grimm if a movie were ever made. When casting eventually came together for 2005’s ‘Fantastic Four,’ he walked up to Stan Lee and introduced himself simply as Ben Grimm.
That dedication paid off with Lee himself reportedly naming Chiklis’s performance among his favorite portrayals of any Marvel character brought to the screen, across both the 2005 film and its 2007 sequel, ‘Rise of the Silver Surfer.’
When Marvel’s rebooted ‘Fantastic Four’ franchise finally arrived under the MCU banner, Chiklis handled the transition with genuine warmth rather than bitterness. Ahead of ‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ release last year, he publicly wished the new cast well, writing that he admired the actors stepping into these “iconic roles,” with Ebon Moss-Bachrach taking over as the MCU’s new Ben Grimm.
That graciousness extended even after reports confirmed Chiklis would not be reprising the role for a cameo in ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ a decision he’s since spoken about candidly, even recalling the genuinely grueling experience of wearing the original film’s 60-pound practical Thing suit.
Despite sitting out ‘Doomsday,’ Chiklis has remained consistent in leaving the door open for some future return, whether that means a brief cameo, a multiversal variant appearance, or something else entirely down the line. Given Marvel’s increasing willingness to bring back legacy actors in unexpected ways, from Chris Evans’ surprise return as Johnny Storm in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ to various other multiversal cameos across recent projects, Chiklis’s continued openness doesn’t feel like an entirely far-fetched possibility.
Even decades removed from his original run as Ben Grimm, Chiklis’s performance has maintained a genuine cult following among fans of the original early-2000s films. His willingness to keep the conversation alive, rather than distancing himself from the role, has only reinforced that lasting connection between actor and character.
Given how much affection still surrounds his original performance, any eventual Marvel Studios cameo would likely generate significant excitement among longtime fans who’ve followed his Ben Grimm journey since the beginning.
