For more than 2 decades, the ‘Fast & Furious’ saga has been all about family, fast cars, and ever-escalating stunts. The franchise grew from a street-racing crime film into a globe-trotting blockbuster series that has earned more than $7 billion at the global box office. Now, the ‘Fast & Furious’ TV series is officially shifting into gear.

The idea first surfaced earlier this year. During NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation in May, franchise star Vin Diesel took the stage and revealed that a scripted series was in development, explaining that fans had spent the past decade asking for more stories about the legacy characters.

That ambition is now becoming reality. As first reported by Deadline, Peacock has greenlit its first TV series based on the ‘Fast & Furious’ movie franchise. The streamer is targeting a 2028 premiere, with Diesel on board as an executive producer.

The creative team is already in place. Mike Daniels, known for ‘Sons of Anarchy’, ‘Shades of Blue’, and ‘The Rockford Files’, and Wolfe Coleman, known for ‘Shades of Blue’ and ‘911: Lone Star’, will serve as co-showrunners, pilot writers, and executive producers.

They’re joined by a deep bench of franchise veterans. Diesel will executive produce alongside One Race’s Sam Vincent, Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty, as well as Jeff Kirschenbaum and Chris Morgan. Universal Television is the studio behind the project. Plot details are being kept under wraps for now.

It’s also unclear whether any of the beloved characters from the film series will appear in the show’s storyline. This will mark a first for the franchise in live action. ‘Fast & Furious’ has visited television before through the animated Netflix series ‘Fast & Furious Spy Racers’, but the Peacock project will be the property’s first live-action series.

Diesel’s May announcement made a much bigger promise. At the upfront, he said Peacock was launching 4 shows from the ‘Fast & Furious’ universe, though Peacock later clarified that only one was actively being developed.

Diesel also explained why he felt the timing was finally right. He said that the move into television only made sense once Donna Langley began overseeing the franchise, since he felt confident the integrity of the characters and the sense of family would be protected. The 2028 target date lines up neatly with the movies.

The next and final film in the main franchise, ‘Fast Forever’, is set to hit theaters on March 17, 2028. That film is expected to bring the story full circle. According to reports, Diesel is working to return the franchise to Los Angeles and reunite Dom with Brian O’Conner, giving the saga a fitting farewell on the big screen.

With the series premiering in the same year, Universal appears poised to hand the baton from film to television, keeping the ‘Fast & Furious’ family alive long after the final movie rolls its credits.

Peacock is clearly expanding its slate in a big way. Alongside the ‘Fast & Furious’ news, the streamer also announced it is developing a drama called ‘The Chairman’, starring Eddie Murphy.

Which ‘Fast & Furious’ character would you most want to see return in the new TV series?
