The movie takes inspiration from the popular Nintendo Wii game Super Mario Galaxy, which was released in 2007. Just like in the game, the story involves traveling between unusual planets with strange gravity and environments. The trailer also hints at several familiar faces from the Mario universe.
Along with the main heroes and villains, other characters appear briefly in the preview. These include Birdo, King Wart, and even the giant T-Rex that many players remember from the game Super Mario Odyssey.
The animated film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic. A large group of well-known actors provide the voices for the characters. Chris Pratt returns as Mario, while Anya Taylor-Joy voices Princess Peach and Charlie Day plays Luigi. Jack Black is also back as Bowser, alongside performers like Keegan-Michael Key, Donald Glover, Issa Rae, Benny Safdie, Kevin Michael Richardson, Luis Guzmán, and Brie Larson.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie follows the huge success of The Super Mario Movie, which was released in 2023. That film was produced by Illumination and Nintendo and distributed by Universal Pictures. It became one of the biggest animated hits in recent years and earned about $1.3 billion worldwide from a budget of around $100 million.
The earlier film also made history by becoming the first movie based on a video game to pass the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
The new sequel hopes to continue that success when it arrives in theaters on April 1, 2026. Based on the reaction to the final trailer, excitement among fans is already building as the release date gets closer.
Expanding the Mario story into space is a fun idea that could bring something new to the series while still keeping the familiar characters people love. The first film showed how popular these characters still are, and this sequel seems ready to go even bigger.
