House of the Dragon is coming back. HBO has officially renewed the show for a fourth season, which is expected to arrive sometime in 2028.

Fans won’t have to wait too long for the third season, though, which is set to premiere in the summer of 2026.

The news came during an HBO press presentation in New York. CEO Casey Bloys shared the updates, including that another Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has been renewed for a second season even before its first season launches on January 18.

That second season is planned for 2027, which means fans of the Thrones universe will have new stories every year until 2028.

Francesca Orsi, the EVP of HBO programming, commented on the renewals, saying, “We are thrilled to be able to deliver new seasons of these two series for the next three years, for the legion of fans of the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe.”

“Together, ‘House of the Dragon’ and ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ reveal just how expansive and richly imagined George R. R. Martin’s universe continues to be. In January, I think audiences will be delighted by the inspiring underdog tale of Dunk and Egg that George and Ira Parker have captured so beautifully. And this summer, ‘House of the Dragon’ is set to ignite once again with some of its most epic battles yet.”

The show has been doing well with critics too. On Rotten Tomatoes, season two has an 83% approval rating based on 272 reviews, with an average score of 7.55 out of 10.

The website said, “Approaching its dynastic cataclysm with a deliberate stride rather than a charging gallop, House of the Dragon carefully sets up its emotional stakes to make the fiery spectacle all the more scorching.” On Metacritic, season two got a score of 73 out of 100, which means it received generally favorable reviews.

Viewership has been strong, even if it dipped a little at first. The season two premiere had 7.8 million viewers across TV and streaming, down 22% from season one’s 10 million. In Latin America, the audience was actually up by 30% from season one.

According to Samba TV, 1.3 million U.S. households watched the first airing of the season two premiere, compared to 2.6 million for season one. Streaming also did well. During the week of June 17–23, 2024, Nielsen reported that people streamed a total of 1.23 billion minutes of the show. Viewership grew over the season, and the finale reached 8.9 million viewers across TV and streaming. It also became the most-watched streaming episode in the show’s history, according to HBO.

With season three on the way and season four already confirmed, House of the Dragon fans have a lot to look forward to in the coming years.
