First Look at Nick Frost as Hagrid in HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series Revealed in the New Trailer
HBO has released the first trailer for its new Harry Potter series, giving fans a first glimpse of the cast and revealing a surprise premiere date of Christmas 2026. The series will retell J.K. Rowling’s stories in a multi-season format, starting with Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
The trailer introduces a new generation of Hogwarts students. Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton is Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout is Ron Weasley. Among the adult cast, viewers can see John Lithgow as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost stepping into the iconic role of Hagrid.
In the footage, Frost is seen fully dressed in Hagrid’s robes, complete with a long beard, capturing the gentle giant’s appearance perfectly.

Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on Succession, is leading the series as showrunner, with several episodes directed by Mark Mylod, who previously worked on Game of Thrones. JB Perrette, CEO at Warner Bros. Discovery, called the show “the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period. It’s number one, two and three in many ways.”
Daniel Radcliffe, the original Harry Potter, praised the new cast. “I’m sure Dominic is going to be better than me,” Radcliffe said. “I learned as I went. I look back on what I did now with a lot more kindness, and I find it less embarrassing now that I’m older. But I was very much learning how to do it for a long time on Potter.”
The trailer gives fans their first real look at the new Hogwarts, with Nick Frost’s Hagrid stealing the scene in his signature outfit. It sets the tone for a fresh, magical take on the classic story while staying true to the heart of Rowling’s world.
