Nick Frost is officially the new Hagrid in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. The first image of Frost in character has just been revealed, showing him dressed as the beloved half-giant in his familiar robes.

Fans will recognize the look from the original movies, where Hagrid was played by the late Robbie Coltrane. This image comes just a day after fans were given their first glimpse of Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter himself. The show is now confirmed to release in 2027, and filming started yesterday at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.

Hagrid, the warm-hearted gamekeeper of Hogwarts, has always been one of the most loved characters in the Harry Potter world. He first appears in The Philosopher’s Stone and stays important throughout the whole series.

He’s known for his deep love of magical creatures and his strong loyalty to Dumbledore. He’s also one of Harry’s earliest friends and mentors. HBO describes him as a “cuddly giant who is as loyal as he is brave.”

Nick Frost, known from movies like Hot Fuzz, is one of the biggest names in HBO’s new cast. He joins other well-known actors like John Lithgow, who is playing Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Janet McTeer as McGonagall.

HBO shared that casting announcements are continuing to come in. New names added just yesterday include Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Hooch, and Anton Lesser as Ollivander.

Earlier casting news also revealed that Lox Pratt will play Draco Malfoy, with Johnny Flynn as his father Lucius. Petunia and Vernon Dursley will be played by Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby, while Katherine Parkinson is set to appear as Molly Weasley.

Of course, the most exciting casting news was the announcement of the new trio of leads: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. According to HBO, this new series is expected to run for ten years.

HBO has called this new show a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s books. Rowling herself is involved as an executive producer, alongside Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman, who also worked on the original film series. Francesca Gardiner is both writing and executive producing the series. Mark Mylod will direct multiple episodes and is also an executive producer.

The series is produced by HBO, Brontë Film and TV, and Warner Bros. Television. Fans can expect more first-look images and updates as filming continues.
