Stephen Merchant is joining the cast of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon for its third season, adding a new twist to the story.

According to Collider, Merchant will play a character named Julian, who becomes part of the main group alongside fan favorites Daryl Dixon and Carol Peletier, played by Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride.

Season three takes Daryl and Carol to Spain. They have left the characters they met in France behind and will encounter several new faces along the way. Merchant’s Julian is a surprising addition, since the actor is best known for comedy and as one of the creators of the original UK version of The Office.

However, Merchant has shown action skills in films like Logan and Jojo Rabbit, which should help him in this new role. He said his character will bring “a much-needed touch of laughter to Daryl and Carol’s next adventure.”

In addition to Merchant, the new season features Eduardo Noriega, Óscar Jaenada, Alexandra Masangkay, Candela Saitta, and Hugo Arbués. The ensemble cast is expected to bring fresh challenges and dynamics to the series as Daryl and Carol navigate the zombie-filled world.

Collider shared an exclusive sneak peek of Julian ahead of the season premiere, which is set to air on AMC this Sunday, September 7. The preview gives fans a first look at Merchant’s character and hints at how he will fit into the story.
