Jude Law has been revealed in full makeup and costume as Vladimir Putin in the first look from the upcoming political thriller The Wizard of the Kremlin.

The film, directed by Olivier Assayas, is based on Giuliano da Empoli’s 2022 novel and explores the rise of Putin amid the collapse of the Soviet Union and the early years of the Russian Federation. The story centers on Vadim Baranov, a fictional young artist who becomes a powerful government advisor and spin doctor, played by Paul Dano.

The cast also includes Alicia Vikander as Ksenia, Tom Sturridge, and Jeffrey Wright. According to sources, the movie was filmed in March 2025 in Riga, Latvia, and production companies Curiosa Films and Gaumont are behind the project.

The screenplay was co-written by Assayas and Emmanuel Carrère, adapting the novel into a political drama that mixes real events with fictional storytelling.

The Wizard of the Kremlin is set to premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2025, competing in the main section. Jude Law’s portrayal of Putin has drawn early attention, with the first official images of him in character already released to the public.

Paul Dano’s character, Vadim Baranov, offers a behind-the-scenes perspective of Russian politics during the 1990s and early 2000s. Baranov transforms from an artist into a top government advisor, navigating the turbulent political environment while assisting Putin’s ascent.

The film promises a mix of historical and fictional elements, highlighting both political strategy and personal ambition. Law’s casting as Putin was announced in January 2025, adding to the film’s growing buzz. Other cast members, including Zach Galifianakis, were reported to be involved early in the project alongside Dano and Vikander.

Assayas, known for films like Personal Shopper and Clouds of Sils Maria, co-wrote and directed the adaptation. The story’s focus on a young Russian leader rising to power through skillful manipulation and strategic alliances is expected to provide a tense and compelling political narrative.

Seeing Jude Law in the role of Putin immediately gives the film a striking visual and adds star power to the project. The release of the first look already has audiences talking and sets high expectations for the Venice premiere.
