First Official Look at DCU’s Supergirl Revealed – Milly Alcock’s Hero Won’t Be Like Superman
DC fans finally got their first official look at Milly Alcock as Supergirl. James Gunn, who is running DC Studios and directing the upcoming Superman movie, shared the first official image on Instagram. The post said simply, “Look Out. 2026”, hinting at when fans will see her full story on screen.
Alcock is known for her role as young Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon, but now she’s stepping into the world of superheroes. She made her Supergirl debut right at the end of Gunn’s Superman movie, teasing what’s next for DC’s movie universe.

In an interview, Gunn explained that this version of Supergirl will feel very different from Superman. “She’s a mess. She’s a total mess,” he said. “I mean, I think as we learn, she’s had a completely different background from Superman. A much more difficult background. He’s had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents that loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that. And she’s ended up different than her cousin.”
The film, simply called Supergirl, will focus on Kara Zor-El’s life and her much darker story. According to Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios, the movie is directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira. Alongside Alcock, the film stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, and Emily Beecham.
Supergirl will follow Kara as she leaves her destroyed home planet and sets out on a space journey with her dog Krypto. Along the way, she meets a young girl named Ruthye and begins what’s been described as a dangerous revenge mission.
Her character’s history will shape the tone of the film. Unlike Superman, who was raised in a loving home on Earth, Kara grew up watching her people die on Krypton. This led to a harder, colder version of the Kryptonian hero. Gunn described her as “pixie-ish, but very attitudinal.”
Jason Momoa will also appear in the movie as the alien bounty hunter Lobo, while Krypto, the super-dog, will return after first appearing in the Superman film.
This Supergirl movie has been in development for years. Back in 2018, DC wanted to make a Supergirl film as part of the old DC Extended Universe. Sasha Calle played Supergirl in 2023’s The Flash.
But everything changed when Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios in 2022. They announced a fresh start with a new Supergirl movie in 2023. It was first called Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, based on the comic series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, but the film later dropped the subtitle.
Filming started in January 2025 and finished by May, with scenes shot in London, Scotland, and at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden. Now, the film is in post-production as it heads toward its big release.
DC Studios has confirmed that Supergirl will hit theaters in the US on June 26, 2026. It will be part of Chapter One of the new DC Universe, called Gods and Monsters.
With Milly Alcock’s fresh take on Kara and a much darker storyline, this Supergirl movie is shaping up to be something totally different from what fans expect from Superman’s world.
