Dr. Seuss’ mischievous feline is getting another shot at the big screen. ‘The Cat in the Hat’ marks the first theatrical feature from Warner Bros. Pictures Animation, with studio animation head Bill Damaschke describing it as a doorway into the studio’s own Seussiverse.

Directed and written by Erica Rivinoja of ‘Trolls’ and Alessandro Carloni of ‘Kung Fu Panda 3’, the film features Bill Hader as the voice of the Cat. He’s joined by a voice cast that includes Quinta Brunson, Xochitl Gomez, Matt Berry, Giancarlo Esposito, and America Ferrera.

The story follows the Cat as he tries to cheer up a pair of siblings who have just moved to a new town. Known for taking things too far, the Cat may be facing his last chance to prove himself, or risk losing his magical hat.

The project arrives with something to prove. The 2003 live-action adaptation remains infamous with critics and audiences alike, giving this animated version the challenge of finally delivering a beloved big-screen take on the classic book.

Based on the first wave of reactions, the film may be off to a promising start. As The Hollywood Handle shared, early viewers have praised ‘The Cat in the Hat’ as a wildly funny and wonderful family film.

One reaction compared it to a demented, new-generation take on ‘Mary Poppins’, highlighting the Cat’s chaotic energy as a fixer who swoops in to shake up a family. Another described the movie as inventive, heartfelt, whimsical, and often very funny.

These are early social media impressions rather than formal critics’ reviews. Still, the encouraging tone suggests the film could strike the balance between zany comedy and emotional storytelling that the filmmakers were aiming for.

For Hader, this isn’t his first time playing the iconic character. He portrayed a more adult version of the Cat in a 2014 ‘Saturday Night Live’ sketch, and he confirmed at the film’s Los Angeles premiere that the ‘SNL’ take was a very different version from this family-friendly adaptation.

The directors have showered him with praise, calling him one of the funniest voice actors around and noting his ability to hit the film’s heartfelt moments. Rivinoja has also revealed that Hader’s natural vocal quirks made it into the movie, sometimes replacing the need for sound effects entirely.

Hader admitted that the high-energy role was far more demanding than people might expect, describing voice acting as surprisingly exhausting work. The studio is also leaning into music to promote the film. ‘The Cat in the Hat Theme Song’, performed by Fitz and Tim Minchin featuring Hader, was released as the soundtrack’s lead single in September.

Hilary Duff also contributed an original song, ‘CATastrophe’, released on October 2. Lorne Balfe composed the film’s score. The film has shifted dates several times, with earlier plans targeting a release in early 2026. Warner Bros. first showed footage at CinemaCon, where Hader joked about his own daughter’s skeptical reaction to his casting.

Now, with a holiday-season release just around the corner, the early reactions give the studio’s animation relaunch some welcome momentum. ‘The Cat in the Hat’ hits theaters and IMAX on November 6.
