First Set Photos for ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ Reveal Just How Massive This Production Really Is
Marvel Studios has spent years building anticipation for the culmination of its Multiverse Saga, and fans have had to rely almost entirely on rumors, leaked concept art, and scattered casting news to get any sense of what’s actually coming. That drought of concrete visuals has made even the smallest scraps of information feel significant.
Production on the next Avengers crossover has been quietly ramping up in the UK, following a familiar pattern of secrecy that Marvel typically maintains during a film’s earliest stages. With filming reportedly just getting underway, fans have been eager for any glimpse behind the curtain.
That glimpse arrived in the form of an aerial photo showing an enormous set under construction, offering the first real look at just how large-scale ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ is shaping up to be. The image reveals sprawling structures, scaffolding, and staging areas spread across what appears to be a massive studio backlot, hinting at the sheer scope Marvel is building for the franchise’s climactic finale.
Despite construction clearly being well underway, the film’s production schedule has hit a bump early on. According to Filmbase, a UK industry site that tracks crew directories and job alerts for film and television productions, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ has already gone on a five-week hiatus at Pinewood Studios shortly after cameras started rolling.
That pause is reportedly set to end in late September, when production resumes at the same location. The timing suggests that while sets like the one shown in this new image are already taking shape, the actual shooting schedule may end up more staggered than fans initially expected.
‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ serves as the direct follow-up to ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ continuing the story of Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor Von Doom as he seizes control of a newly merged reality. Anthony and Joe Russo return to direct, working from a script co-written by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, the same team steering the franchise’s current chapter.
Recent reporting has suggested the film may draw elements from the 2010-2012 comic miniseries ‘Avengers: The Children’s Crusade,’ adapted into the context of Doctor Doom’s rule over Battleworld. If accurate, that would give the film a distinct narrative identity separate from either of Marvel’s previous comic Secret Wars storylines, while still centering on Doom’s dominion over a fractured, combined universe.
As the fortieth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ‘Secret Wars’ carries the weight of closing out the entire Multiverse Saga that began years earlier. The film is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 17, 2027, after Marvel shifted its release date later in the year from its original May placement.
Marvel has also reportedly considered an unconventional marketing approach for the project, with some suggesting the first footage could debut as a special post-credits scene attached to IMAX screenings of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ sometime after that film’s release. Nothing about that plan has been confirmed, but it would mark an unusually early and unconventional way to tease a film still over a year away.
Seeing physical construction of this scale so early in the production process reinforces just how ambitious Marvel intends this finale to be. Whether the massive backlot pictured represents Battleworld itself, one of its many merged territories, or something else entirely remains unknown for now.
For a franchise built around ever-escalating stakes, a set this sprawling suggests Marvel isn’t holding back as it approaches the end of an era defined by the Multiverse Saga.
