In the movie, Clooney plays Jay Kelly, a well-known actor who goes on a trip across Europe with his longtime manager, played by Sandler. As they travel, they think about the choices they’ve made, their relationships, and the legacies they’re leaving behind. Laura Dern plays Jay’s publicist, while Billy Crudup plays an old acting buddy who never got his big break.
The cast is stacked with familiar faces, including Grace Edwards as Jay’s youngest daughter, Riley Keough as his oldest, Stacy Keach as his father, and Jim Broadbent as a late director who gave Jay his big break. Greta Gerwig plays Ron’s wife, and there are also appearances by Emily Mortimer, Patrick Wilson, Nicôle Lecky, Eve Hewson, Alba Rohrwacher, and many more.
Baumbach co-wrote the script with Emily Mortimer. Amy Pascal and David Heyman produced the film through Pascal Pictures and Heyday Films. The project was first announced back in December 2023, with Clooney and Sandler already set to star. By March 2024, Laura Dern, Billy Crudup, and Riley Keough had joined, and more big names were confirmed shortly after.
Filming began in March 2024 and took place in New York City, London, and Tuscany. Linus Sandgren shot the movie on 35mm film, his first time working with Baumbach. Editing is handled by Valerio Bonelli, while Nicholas Britell composed the score.
The movie will make its world premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival on August 28, 2025, where it’s competing for the Golden Lion. It will also be shown at the New York Film Festival before opening in select theaters on November 14. After that, it will hit Netflix on December 5.
