S.S. Rajamouli has officially unveiled the first teaser for his upcoming film, Varanasi, giving fans their first glimpse of the ambitious new project.

The teaser was revealed at a massive event on November 15 at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad, India, which drew tens of thousands of excited fans. Polygon was among the outlets covering the event.

Varanasi promises to be Rajamouli’s most adventurous film yet. The story spans centuries, starting in 512 CE in an ancient kingdom and jumping to the year 2071 as meteors threaten the city.

The trailer also teases scenes in Antarctica, Africa, and underground caves, blending epic battles between humans and gods with thrilling adventures across the globe. Rajamouli is pushing visual boundaries, combining stunning CGI and large-scale action sequences to deliver a cinematic spectacle.

A major highlight of the project is its IMAX presentation. Rajamouli confirmed that Varanasi is being filmed specifically in a new premium landscape format for IMAX, a first for India’s film industry. This technology aims to create a wider, more immersive cinematic experience for audiences around the world.

The film features Mahesh Babu as Rudhra, an explorer on a quest for ancient artifacts, Priyanka Chopra Jonas as fellow adventurer Mandakini, and Prithviraj Sukumaran as the villain Kumbha, who wields advanced technology including a robotic chair reminiscent of Doc Ock. The teaser also hints at thrilling set pieces, including Mahesh Babu riding a bull with a trident against ancient pyramids.

Varanasi is set for a 2027 worldwide release, and with Rajamouli at the helm, expectations are sky-high. Fans are already comparing it to his previous global hit, RRR, and the teaser suggests that this film will be even more visually spectacular and adventurous.
