If anyone of you forgot about Avatar, allow us to remind you. Yes, the sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 epic sci-fi blockbuster is still on its way and it’s set to hit theaters on December 16, 2022. Avatar 2 is not only one of the most anticipated movies of the year but one of the most-expected sequels in the last 10 years. Considering that the movie is set to be released in only nine months, talks about the first trailer are arising.

As The Transom recently reported, the first official footage of the anticipated sequel might debut in theaters with the release of Doctor Strange of the Multiverse of Madness. The first Avatar movie was a revolution in terms of visual effects and visual design of the movies back in 2009 when it was released, and it is expected that the sequel will push the boundaries even more, so it seems quite logical that Disney wants to release the first footage on the biggest possible screen.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is expected to hit theaters on May 6, which seems like the right time for Avatar to be officially revealed. Following the acquisition of Fox in 2019, Disney is now the owner of the Avatar franchise, so they’re obviously planning a big marketing campaign using their other popular franchises, like the MCU. The first trailer for Multiverse of Madness also debuted as the post-credit scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home, before it was released online a few days later.

James Cameron Reveals More Details About The Upcoming ‘Avatar 2’

Original Avatar movie was released in 2009 by 20th Century Fox, and it grossed more than $2.7 billion worldwide, which made it the highest-grossing movie of all time. In 2019, Disney’s Avengers: Endgame was released and it managed to overthrow Avatar and become the highest-grossing movie ever, but only for a little while. In 2020, Avatar was briefly re-released in China, which was enough to return to first place in front of Endgame. Still, now that both of these franchises are under Disney’s umbrella, we know that only one company will count the money that the sequels will make in the future.

Avatar 2 was originally planned to be released in 2014 (yeah, you’ve read it right), but it was delayed numerous times due to the slow development, expensive and demanding production, and for the latest, the pandemic. James Cameron announced that four sequels are in development, and Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 were filmed back-to-back between 2017 and 2020. Avatar 3 is set to be released in December 2024.

Avatar 2 is starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, and Matt Gerald, who will reprise their roles from the original movie. Sigourney Weaver, who played Grace Augustine in the original movie will also return, but in a different role, and newcomers are Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Oona Chaplin, Vin Diesel, and CJ Jones.

Avatar 2 is set to be released on December 16, 2022.
