Some literary adaptations carry more weight than others, especially when the person bringing the story to screen shares a direct family connection to its previous, celebrated version. That’s exactly the situation surrounding Netflix’s newest limited series, and its stars are now stepping fully into the spotlight as the project’s years-long journey finally reaches its final stretch.

Florence Pugh and Zoe Kazan turned heads at an advance screening for “East of Eden” in West Hollywood, posing together for photos ahead of the series’ October 1 debut on Netflix. Pugh wore a Rodarte embroidered yellow tulle ensemble paired with Bvlgari jewelry, while Kazan opted for a black slip dress, both stars marking one of the first major public moments for a project that has reportedly been in development since 2020.

The special screening and conversation event, held Thursday at The London West Hollywood at Beverly Hills, drew a notable crowd of famous attendees beyond just the show’s stars. Guests included Jude Law, “Grey’s Anatomy” alum Kim Raver, “The Summer I Turned Pretty” actress Isabella Briggs, “Dark” actress Lisa Vicari, “10 Truths About Love” actress Camilla Belle, “But I’m a Cheerleader” actor Joel Michaely, “Teen Wolf” actress Holland Roden, and “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke.

Kazan’s connection to “East of Eden” runs deeper than most adaptations, given that her grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the celebrated 1955 film version of John Steinbeck’s novel. Nearly seven decades later, Kazan has written this new interpretation herself, serving as co-showrunner alongside Jeb Stuart while also executive producing the seven-episode limited series.

That generational connection adds an extra layer of significance to the project’s promotional rollout, giving audiences a chance to see how Kazan’s version measures up to her grandfather’s legacy once the series arrives. The show reimagines Steinbeck’s multigenerational family saga through the perspective of Cathy Ames, played by Pugh, who also serves as an executive producer on the project.

Beyond Pugh, “East of Eden” stars Christopher Abbott and Mike Faist as brothers Adam and Charles Trask, alongside Hoon Lee, Tracy Letts, Ciarán Hinds, and Martha Plimpton. Joseph Zada and Joe Anders round out the cast as the younger generation of Trask family members, continuing the story’s sprawling, decades-spanning structure.

Garth Davis directs the first four episodes of the series, with Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre taking over directing duties for the final three. That split creative approach reflects the scale of the adaptation, which stretches Steinbeck’s original novel across a full seven-episode television format rather than compressing it into a single film.

With the show’s tagline framing its central theme as “Good and evil are a choice,” the series appears positioned to lean into the same moral complexity that made Steinbeck’s original novel such a lasting piece of American literature. Netflix has continued rolling out promotional material in the lead-up to release, and this advance screening marks one of the final major public events before the show becomes available to stream.

All seven episodes of “East of Eden” will premiere globally on Netflix beginning October 1, giving audiences their first full opportunity to judge how Kazan’s modern interpretation stacks up against both Steinbeck’s source material and her grandfather’s iconic film adaptation.
