Florence Pugh Gets New Fall TV Preview Spotlight as Netflix’s ‘East of Eden’ Approaches
Adapting a literary classic already immortalized on screen comes with an almost impossible set of expectations, especially when the original film helped launch one of Hollywood’s most iconic careers. Taking on John Steinbeck’s sprawling family saga meant inevitably standing in the shadow of James Dean’s legendary performance as Cal Trask.
That challenge became even more personal for the series’ creator, given her own family connection to the material. Zoe Kazan, granddaughter of Elia Kazan, the director behind the celebrated 1955 film adaptation, has spent years reworking Steinbeck’s novel for a new generation, and new images previewing the project have just given fans their clearest look yet at how her version differs from her grandfather’s.
Entertainment Weekly has released new images from Netflix’s upcoming “East of Eden” series as part of its Fall TV Preview coverage, featuring Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott, Mike Faist, Hoon Lee, and Joseph Zada ahead of the show’s October 1 premiere. The seven-episode limited series reimagines Steinbeck’s multigenerational story of the Trask family, with Netflix positioning Pugh’s character, the enigmatic antihero Cathy Ames, at the center of the narrative in a way the original film never fully explored.
Kazan, who wrote and executive produced all seven episodes, has been explicit about wanting to shift the story’s focus. Where the 1955 film centered almost entirely on Cal Trask, played by James Dean, Kazan’s version builds its narrative around Cathy, a character who receives only a fraction of that attention in the movie. “The movie isn’t a super faithful adaptation of the small part of the book that it is adapting,” Kazan told Netflix’s Tudum. “What I felt was the whole epic story is an opportunity to explore, to fall in love with all these characters.”
Finding the right actress to carry that expanded focus was central to how the project came together in the first place. Kazan didn’t hesitate when explaining why Pugh was always her only choice for the role. “I didn’t have a backup,” she said. “I didn’t have another person that I thought would be just as good. She is the exact right person to play Cathy.”

That confidence extended to the show’s approach to casting the Trask twins as well. According to the production, Kazan had actors audition for both Cal and Aron simultaneously, wanting to preserve a genuine sense of ambiguity about which brother would ultimately embody which side of their complicated family legacy.
Rounding out the ensemble are Tracy Letts as patriarch Cyrus Trask, Martha Plimpton as Faye, and Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, alongside Joe Anders playing Cal’s twin brother, Aron. That structure allows the series to trace the Trask family across three generations, following Cyrus down through his sons Adam and Charles, and eventually to Adam’s own twin sons.

Kazan has emphasized that despite reshaping which character sits at the story’s emotional core, she remained committed to grounding the adaptation in Steinbeck’s actual text. “The thing that was really important to me was to stay rooted in the text of the book when it came to exploring who Cathy is,” she said. “Basically everything that’s in the series has at least a root in the book.”
First announced back in 2022, “East of Eden” has spent years in development before finally reaching its October 1 premiere. With Entertainment Weekly’s new Fall TV Preview images offering one more glimpse ahead of launch, fans eager to see this fresh take on Steinbeck’s novel won’t have much longer to wait.
