Florence Pugh recently spoke about her experiences with intimacy coordinators on the latest episode of “The Louis Theroux Podcast.” She shared both positive and negative experiences, shedding light on how the role works and why it has become a standard on film sets.

Intimacy coordinators are professionals hired to make sure that s** scenes are filmed safely and respectfully. They help actors understand boundaries, guide the choreography of the scene, and ensure everyone feels comfortable while telling the story. Pugh said the goal is not to complicate things but to create a safe and clear environment.

“It’s not to get in the way. It’s not to confuse, it’s not to make things more complicated or make things more awkward. I’ve had good ones and bad ones,” she said.

While she has had fantastic experiences with some coordinators, Pugh admitted that others made the set uncomfortable. “I’ve also had a s*** example where someone just made it so weird and so awkward and really wasn’t helpful and kind of was just like wanting to be a part of the set in a way that wasn’t helpful, and I think it’s a job that’s still figuring itself out,” she said.

Pugh explained that working with skilled coordinators helped her understand the storytelling behind s** scenes. “I’ve been able to understand better meaning now through working with great ones in s** scenes [about] finding the story of what it is, what kind of s** is it, how do you touch each other, how long have you been having s** for.”

“Everybody’s just kind of working away to chip away at the scene. And I think when I worked with a fantastic coordinator, I was like, ‘Oh, this is what I’ve been missing, understanding the dance of intimacy as opposed to just shooting a s** scene.’ There are good ones and bad ones, and it’s through the good ones that I have learned how effective it can really be.”

Her comments highlight that intimacy coordinators are still a developing part of the film industry. When done well, they allow actors to perform intimate scenes safely and authentically, adding depth to the story while protecting everyone on set.
